  • Re: Problems with intermittent connection to shared drive

Are all these computers that loose the connectivity on your Local Network or are they located on the other side of the WAN router? Do they also loose connectivity to the Internet and other services on the SBS server (Exchange, Internal Web site)? Dave

Hi Dawson, Welcome to Tech Soup. Do check your web site from an Internet Cafe or a friends computer, just to be sure it is your web site that is infected and not your computer. If it is your web site your web developer should be able to get on your web site and change the password, and clean up the mess. If it is your computer that is infected, Malware

Remember that your switch is a layer 2 device unless you get a specific layer 3 switch, so you still need a router to put your traffic on the correct segment. So you will have pfsense or m0n0wall moving the traffic between the segments you set up in your switch. Another managed switch to check out is the HP ProCurve line. The ones I've gotten have

For these products a seat = a license. So you have a total order of 6 seats which meets the minimum requirements. Depending on how your VOIP is set up, you may have a POTS line for your FAX machine, 911 dialing or Fire Panel support, you might be able to tap one of those for the limited meter loading. Dave

The secure web portal would be preferred over the encrypted email, since both ends of the email have to agree on the encryption method security policies etc. If you only have to establish secure email to one or two parties outside of your org, the encrypted email may work, but any more than that and you have the tech support issues and recipients not

If you haven't wiped your old router, you can boot a PC hooked up on the lan side of the router and from the command prompt on the PC do an ipconfig /all This will list the IP parameters that the DHCP server gives the PC (if you have no Wan connection you may not see the ISP addresses) If the DNS server is the IP of your router then that is your

You want to choose a static IP address for your server that is not in the DHCP range of the router, but is on the same subnet. So if your internal network is using the 192.168.1.0 subnet you will want to set your DHCP server to use some thing like 192.168.1.50 - 192.168.1.200 for the DHCP assignable addresses. This leaves you 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1
