  • Re: Problems with intermittent connection to shared drive

Dave, Yeah, they are all connected via a switch which is slaved into the router. Strangely they do not lose internet connectivity at all. They just lose connection the shared drive on the SBS (there is currently no internal website, and mail servers have been moved off site). When they lose connection some of them prompt for a username and password

  • Problems with intermittent connection to shared drive

I recently changed out the router on a SBS 2003 network for a non-profit I work for. I ended up needing to remap the shared drive on the server. Ever since then, there has been intermittent loss of connectivity to the drive from all or a couple of the computers on the network. Sometimes this loss of connectivity lasts a few minutes and somtimes a couple

Hey! I got it sorted out. Server back online. I did have to remap the network drives to all the client machines. And it seems the network has slowed down a noticeably. Thanks for all the help.

Dave, Once again thanks. I determined that the old router was handling DHCP by disabling it in the new one to see if addresses were still being handed out. They weren't. I am not sure how to determine what is handling DNS though. I don't see a setting for it in the router interface so I just assumed it was being handled by the server. Which

  • Oopsie...

Based on some really good advice I got here I changed out a bunch of the hardware on a network that I run. This was due , in part, to the fact that the person who installed a firewall/router on the network did not leave behind a password to access it. I managed to get everything set up again without too much trouble but in my exhaustion I made a minor

  • Re: help! google apps, luddites, and other stuff

I can say with a fair amount of certainty that googleapps was a mistake. If you do consider it, you might want to investigate one of their tiered "pay" services. As it stands now I am constantly getting complaints about the emails being slow to load, or generally unavailable. To which I now respond "call google". :)

  • Re: Odd Network Connectivity

After some careful examination of the hardware I've determined the following: The firebox router is connected to the internet via a westell modem. The WAN cable it connected to a data jack the leads all the way to the other side of the office where it is connected to the netgear fs116 switch. The computer in that room and two adjacent rooms, plus

Dave, Thank you again for your timely responses. The firebox and the fs116 are in different rooms (hey i didnt build it). I can access at least one of the machines through remote desktop (this one is my main concern at this point). Also, I can ping other machines from this computer. The FS116 is slaved into the firebox (all the way on the other side

I also just wanted to make sure I heard you right. Did you suggest that the router/firewall disabled the ports for those two machines because a virus was detected? If so, I would then need to reconfigure those ports in order to restore connectivity to those machine? (i.e., it isnt simply a matter of removing the threats, or even reinstalling the OS

Dave, Thanks again. I don't have an issue with resetting to factory defaults, I am just wondering if that would wreak havoc on the rest of the network (i.e. will other devices lose connectivity until i reconfigure it). I only ask because I am trying to keep the man hours low and manageable for my ngo client. I read in the manual that lost password
