  • Hello from The Working Centre in Kitchener, Ontario

Hello everyone from downtown Kitchener, Ontario where The Working Centre's Computer Recycling Project. TWC Comprec has been running since October 2001. A couple of years ago we joined the ranks of Community MAR (Microsoft Authorized Refurbishers). Initially the project began in the basement of our 43 Queen Street location as a way to support TWC's

  • Re: Restore Partitions for Community MARs???

[quote user="shipley.c"] I'm not a Community MAR, but I've always thought that if I did it I would have been creating hidden recovery partitions. I've been using cloning technology for about a decade, and used to make these recovery partitions with ghost awhile back. Its helpfulm considering how much free space there is. [/quote

  • Re: FOG imaging software

Shipley.c does FOG allow you to clone systems with different drive sizes? (e.g. If the source image was from a box with a 10GB hard drive would that expand to fill a system with a 40GB hard drive)? We're currently using Norton Ghost and I'd prefer to use an open source solution.

  • Restore Partitions for Community MARs???

I was wondering if any of the Community MARs are creating restore partitions and if so what software was used to create the partitions? We've been considering this option for a little while since we've found that some of the qualified recipients have been asking about restore media. Up to this point we haven't been providing a backup (images

  • Plastics

One of our out of town recycling partners recently partnered up with a local recycler. Before partnering with the local recycler our out of town partner used to take plastics at no charge. We provided the partner with a lot of motherboards, circuit boards, and monitors. Unfortunately the new partner wants a fortune for individual plastic items, so I'm

  • RE: What cloning software do you recommend?

I used g4u for the first time a few days ago to clone the Windows XP contents of a 40GB to a 120GB hard drive. The clone exited prematurely, but later I discovered the original drive had problems that the cloned drive inherited. After a repair the new drive worked fine. So despite the fact that the clone didn't work quite as expected, it seemed

  • RE: Which piece of free software can your NPO not live without?

Darik's Boot and Nuke, it's an easy method for wiping hard drives. While there's lots of other great open source software we use, DB&N gives our donors peace of mind and an extra layer of security versus just cloning from an image.

  • RE: Public computer management software?

The platform wouldn't matter, Windows or Linux are preferable, but not a necessity. We're thinking more Intranet, something where someone can come in, sit down at any computer within our organization and book time on a computer up to a week, or two weeks later. The catch is that time would have to look blocked to all but administrators who could

  • RE: Open Source Media Center Software

The most commonly implemented Media Centre software on Linux is MythTV . MythTV can be installed on a variety of Linux distributions, but if you're looking for an out-of-the-box solution the closest thing is probably KnoppMyth . I've personally set up a KnoppMyth media centre before and found it extremely cool . The web back end enables you

  • Public computer management software?

Does anyone use web-enabled software to manage public access computers? We would like to implement a software solution to manage our public access computers. The software would have to show booked computers, just say "booked" to the general public, but also enable staff members to determine who booked what computer and the time frame. We don't really
