A couple of belated thoughts: Your IT vendor might be reco'ing Juniper because 1) they sell it, 2) they support it, 3) they use it. Ask them. If you go with a do-it-yourself system like IPcop, Smoothwall or pfSense, you definitely want to use 1GB network cards and not 100MB cards. That may be one of the 318's bottlenecks. Check out upp'ing

You've got a job on your hands. A company I used to work for built automation systems, one for material-handling and the other to retrofit older machine tools. I did no coding for those systems, but supported the engineers who did. It was all done in SUSE (Linux) due to licensing costs. We had a number of engineers working on both projects, so it

I've been running AntiVir for a time now. I used to reco AVG, but version 8 is balky. Stay away from Norton unless it's Symantec Corporate versions. AntiVir Avira only runs $26 a year, I believe. It's good w/ spyware and malware.

You might check out Avira too. They've got a range of AV products for networks.

A quick caveat: I can no longer recommend Hamachi to anyone. I've used it very successfully for four years but in the last three weeks, the service has been plagued with very serious problems. I have no experience with the other LogMeIn products, but Hamachi is no longer a reliable solution.

LogMeIn, Hamachi, same thing. They bought out Hamachi about 3 years ago or so. It's a nice easy-to-use VPN solution. Any file sharing over the web between client PC's needs VPN. Another option is http://www.filesanywhere.com/ I set up one client with them a year ago and it's worked nicely. Very good support from the company. Starts at under

Take a look at "eventvwr". Not sure what OS you've got (Vista? XP?), but there may be something in the logs. Not sure how to use eventvwr? http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=eventvwr+tutorial&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=

Spybot still works well and can be freely used (donationware). MalwareBytes is a "new kid" on the block and impressive too. There is a free version but I'm not sure about restrictions on commercial usage. The pro (paid) version gives you realtime protection. One of the best ways to prevent spyware infections is to eschew Internet Explorer (the default
