Have you tried setting up your network using static IP addresses?

If you copied everything and your laptop supports booting from a USB or Firewire drive it's possible that it might work, but there's no way to know for certain until you try it. IMO, if the Windows install is messed up on the laptop drive, then the same problems will likely arise with the external drive copy as well. What make/model laptop?

Now my next question. Can you boot to a command prompt?

Not likely as your Windows folder from your deskop box contains systems files like HAL.DLL that are specific to your desktop. CRTL+ALT+DEL does nothing? You might need to wait for a bit for it to work if it's going to.
