  • RE: Getting an org excited about wikis

I guess i would also add, make sure you test them out and pick one that makes sense for you user group. I'm a big fan of PmWiki but the way it nests pages can be extremely confusing at first. On the plus side PM's WYSIWYG buttons work pretty well (if your not using Safari) so that seems to make up for it. People here were seriously amazed when

  • Hello from Minneapolis

I thought i should introduce myself after I've been commenting on the forums a couple of times. This is Eric Ishii Eckhardt from Minneapolis. I'm employed by the Walker Art Center in their New Media Initiatives as a designer. There are 4 of us in this department. Two designers who do visual design, XSL, CSS and Flash, one developer/web master

  • RE: Web Hosting

I can second Scott's support of Dreamhost. They offer excellent service and a lot of built in things you might like. The most helpful to me was having PHP MyAdmin pre-installed. They also have WordPress blogs with an installation wizard and a few other things that I don't use but you might find helpful. We don't use Dreamhost for our work

  • RE: Researchers Unveil $100 Laptop for Schoolkids

Like the quote suggests. A project that helps get masses of people the tools to learn and work is a fantastic goal. It also seems like a worth while goal of a planned/non-commercial project could be to showing us how computers can be built to either be upgradable in a long term sense of the word, or to end their service as computers gracefully and non
  • RE: Researchers Unveil $100 Laptop for Schoolkids

I saw a smart comment by Eli on idealist.org about this topic: [QUOTE]In all the updates on the $100 laptop project that I've seen over the years, I've yet to hear discussion about electronic waste. With such an ambitious and emblematic initiative, whose success will be measured, in part, by the completeness of its global deployment, it's
  • RE: Getting an org excited about wikis

Yeah explain that its really fast to edit so there aren't any production bottle necks any more. That generally sold people here. Until they realized that Wiki markup was almost as much of a pain as HTML then they were less excited.

  • RE: wanted virtual project management, collaboration service

We used Base Camp and we liked it, they have a lot of different pricing options , i don't know exactly what you need but it might cover you. There is also Backpack which is a simpler personal management software that might be fine if you need a smaller system. They both have free trials so you can check it out.

  • RE: Open Source Tools for Web 2.0

Steven, We actually hadn't used any of those tools yet although i appreciate your feed back on them. At the Walker we decided a early on that we liked the long term flexibility and reusability that an XSL implementation gave us. Also since we make a lot of short term projects (ie get it done fast) there were a lot of benefits to the XSL development

  • RE: Podcasting Without Electricity ....

We have a couple of projects going on at the Walker Art Center that are audio based. We started off wanting to make audio tours freely available to all of our patrons and we were unhappy with most of our commercial options. We were also concerned that if we used podcasts we would either limit ourselves to patrons who had iPods and who planned ahead
