  • screen reader survey update

Web AIM (http://www.webaim.org/) conducted a survey of screen reader use last year and they have followed it up this year with another one. The survey sample is small, self selected and probably biased towards more experienced screen reader users based in North America. Even when this is born in mind the results of the two surveys make interesting reading

  • Re: Assistive Technology Certification

Hi Mary I do not know of any certification programme for Assistive Technology software, if you find one then let me know. There seem to be two main groups who get into AT. Interested techies tend to do their own 'self directed learning' by trying stuff out and contributing to development and user groups. The other main route into AT is through
  • Re: Help Selling Linux to our ED and Staff

I agree with much of what has come up in this discussion, making a compelling case for small outfits to switch from MS to Linux is hard. MS offer big discounts and out here in Africa pirate copies are readily available, so any argument on cost grounds is hard to make. However, natrixgli has mentioned LTSP, something I have been looking into over the

  • Re: Storage of Photographs

Hi from Nairobi. If your project is for long term storage / archive do not forget about backing up your work, it might seem like a chore but it is a lot easier than having to start scanning all over again. Also do not skimp on scanning resolution. It is always possible to reduce the resolution if you need to for something like use on a web site but

  • knoppix

One way to secure an empty table in a crowded bar unless you are with your techie pals is to start a discussion about the relative merits of different Linux distros but I have to sing the praises of Knoppix 6.0. I am currently in Nairobi on a VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) placement as Adaptive Technology Trainer with the Kenyan Society for the Blind

  • Re: reformatting disk and reinstalling licenses

Pcizk when you reformat the hard disk everything will be lost, so before you start read this and check that it makes sense to you. BEFORE YOU REFORMAT user data, copy all files user emails, if they are stored on the hard disk copy your storage file internet favourites, export to a file make a note of any settings that you will need to recreate, drive

  • Re: e-mail nondelivery issues

Hi When your email is blacklisted it can be a pain to get the blacklisting lifted but you have been given some pointers in that direction. However, your email will have been blacklisted for a reason. The commonest cause is folk running an open relay server that is then exploited by spammers. Unless you can fix whatever problem lead to your email being

  • Re: Software for the blind

Jayne Software solutions for folk who are blind come in two main flavours stuff for people who have some sight and stuff for people who have no sight. If you have some useful sight then there are three main areas that you can work on • Hardware adaptations such as larger than standard monitors, keyboard, mice / tracker balls which may also have

  • IT and visual impairment

From July I will be based in Kenya for eight months on a VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) placement with the Kenya Society for the Blind, part of the role will be providing general IT support and partly training trainers to use specialist software. I have been familiarising various products both commercial (Dolphin, Jaws) and open source (Thunder, NVDA
