To spell check Scribus docs, export to OpenOffice.org. You can do that straight from Scribus or through the PDF (via Acrobat Reader). I use the latter approach to spell check my boss's InDesign docs. :) I am not a design pro, but I like Scribus. Have you looked at CiviCRM? It is free. If you want someone to take care of all the hosting and maintenance, there is a cheap service at CivicSpaces

Generally, I recommend not creating ad-hoc databases (such as those often made in MS Access) when there are alternatives. Have you considered GnuCash for the finances? I used it for several years for my personal finances. It's rather capable.

For several months, I have actually been using Mozilla's Lightning Calendar extension for Thunderbird. It has significantly improved somewhere around 6-9 months ago. It's pretty usable for personal use. While today it is not ready to challenge Outlook in the enterprise, but I have high hopes for Lighting/Sunbird and Chandler in the next 12-24

We've been using ebase 1.0.3 since 2001. There are PC and Mac versions. The latest version is 2.12, but we have found no reason to upgrade. We have over 40,000 name records and over 200,000 payment records.
