  • Re: Do you need help getting your new nonprofit site redesigned?

If you are interested in using a content manager, be aware that you probably don't have to pay extra for one. Most web hosts offer at least one if not several options, allowing you to have the benefit of Joomla, WordPress, etc., at the low cost rates that hosts provide. Each organization has to find the package that's best for them, but be aware

  • Re: RE: Recommend laser printer?

I have a pair of 10-year-old HP Laserjet 4000s that still work fine. But they are newcomers compared to Laserjet 4 we have that still works. It was purchased in 1994 for $1,600! Alas, we had to retire the Laserjet 4 anyway. It doesn't have enough memory to handle the print jobs we send to printers today. I'll also note that I'm a frequent

  • Re: Disaster proof Network Storage for Backup

Online backup is such a wonderful thing I'm surprised more people aren't using it. I have it running on my home computer all the time, and use it extensively at work. Take a look at Carbonite and Mozy. I also use Data Deposit Box, which charges more per gigabyte but allows you to back up as many computers as you want with a single account. There

  • Re: RE: Recommendation for hardware backup solution

Tapes may look appealing, but in my experience the excitement starts when you try to restore a file from those tapes. It's been four years since I've restore a file from tape and I don't miss those thrills. With the cost of hard drives today, a backup to a hard drive can be less expensive than tapes, and, in my experience, more apt to actually

  • Re: Storage Area Networks (SAN) Choices

I read this thread because I haven't done a SAN and was interested. But I had a different reaction than you may have expected. I have worked with VMWare and with a 500 GB SAN you may not be giving yourself enough headroom. One of the nice things about using virtual machines is the ability to store them in a SAN and fire them up when you need them

  • Re: New Database for our organization

You'll also want to look at membership software, since I believe that is the functions you need. I have some familiarity with Catholic Daughters (my mother has been a member for 60 years) and with Fund EZ and I'm thinking that Fund EZ may be a little bit of a stretch to support your needs. I'm also concerned that since you are running such

  • RE: Can I Upgrade to Exchange Server 2007?

There is no upgrade path from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2007. You must build an Exchange 2007 server and then move individual mailboxes to it.

  • RE: Need written policy for SOX nonprofit policy

And note that if you are not-for-profit you are not covered by SOX. Not to say that you can't do you own policies for your own reason. But have a reason first, as that may guide your policy. One policy option is not to retain any e-mail. It's the least expensive, least problematical.

  • RE: Offsite Data Back-up

I'm using a different alternative than the ones mentioned here, so I figured it might be useful for people to know there are options. We have more than 30 locations and so offsite backup for 29 of them can be to the 30th site and that's what we do. We bought a software package and installed it on a computer with an extra hard drive. We are now

  • RE: UPS backups

Just an additional remark: The backup batteries available come in 3 "styles". One will not shut down your computer for you if the power goes off; the second type, generally starting in the $40 area, will shut down Windows XP but not a server. Then there is the more expensive units with software designed to shut down servers.
