  • Infoworld article: "One of cloud computing's best practical apps is community building"

William Hurley uses PBwiki, Google Apps and Facebook to organize an event for 2000 people with 40 volunteers in 8 days (he says.) "Why aren't more nonprofits and local community groups reaping the benefits of the cloud? I would bet the main reason is related to the lack of exposure they have to the technology. Perhaps they simply need someone

  • Re: How do you extend the life of your PCs?

[quote user="ewj"] Besides treating it carefully the only two items I think you get the ROI are hard drive and RAM memory upgrades. Other upgrades (not repairs) I have not found them to be worth it. Video cards giving some a DVD writer are really no improvement in the workplace, I have done a few CPU upgrades and surprisingly user do not see

  • RE: My browsers can't browse, periodically

Thanks, Chris! Uninstalling ZoneAlarm seems to have done the trick; I didn't reinstall any service packs. I have relied on ZoneAlarm for years. Oh well. Windows' firewall doesn't control outbound traffic (so it is half a firewall), so I am looking for alternatives. I will try Comodo first.

  • RE: My browsers can't browse, periodically

Thanks Chris. As I said, the problem persists when all non-MS services, including ZoneAlarm, are turned off.

  • RE: What Tools Do You Use to Reduce Spam in Your Inbox?

Two things: Some users use Pegasus Mail as their email client. It has built in spam-filtering, both rules-based and Bayesian. It works very well, especially once it has been trained a little (which happens automatically when you move mail into the spam folder.) It has a number of other security features, but the spam still comes in to the network. A
  • RE: Recommend laser printer?

I don't have a specific recommendation, but I can offer you a bit of advice (free, so grain of salt, etc.) Good printers can last a long, long time. Bad printers will make you want to shoot yourself in frustration. So it is actually worthwhile to spend a bit more on a decent, sturdy printer. In my view, it actually makes more sense to spend more

  • RE: My browsers can't browse, periodically

Thanks Dave, I know what a hardware firewall is. I didn't know what an "external" firewall was. (External to what? A network segment? A PC?) I don't have a hardware firewall. I have scanned the PC several times with several different scanners for malware. Nothing came up. I will try resetting the IP stack. (I am running Vista, not XP.) Thanks

  • RE: My browsers can't browse, periodically

Thanks, Dave. My ignorance is going to show here. External firewall? I don't know what that is. I have a software firewall, ZoneAlarm (free edition). It works great on my XP machine. The website not playing well with my security software? The problem happens with various different websites, it doesn't seem to matter (or am I missing your point

  • RE: My browsers can't browse, periodically

Thanks, Tim. Non-MS broswers: I have tried IE a few times when both my other browsers were locked up. I got nothing with IE too. But I don't routinely surf with IE. Perhaps I will try that.

  • RE: My browsers can't browse, periodically

Thanks for the reply. Fighting for dominance? I did try disabling all non-MS services, as I said. Is there another level of disablement, short of uninstalling them? Plug-ins? I have none that apply to both Opera and Firefox (and IE, which also will stop working.) Other apps? Skype. Lightscribe Direct Disk Labeling Service. HP's "Health Check". SBSD
