  • Re: How do you extend the life of your PCs?

ooops. you seem to think i've said that good or lots of memory or bad ( too small of ) memory can affect if a hard drive becomes fragmented faster or slower. what i said is that more memory can ease the negative symptoms of a fragmented hard drive. I've also said that after de-fragmenting a drive I don't notice much speed increase. I kind

Wow. Great article. I'd suggest a 2nd version of this same article once everyone has added comments. Before I call in the aging PC death squad I take 2 different approaches ======================================= a) is it a home computer or a unique computer in a business or b) used in a bigger network, and can easily be re-installed or recloned

  • Re: Experience with thin clients or desktop virtualization?

I've setup over 2 dozen labs and I've avoided a lab with thin clients due to the problems noted by another user here. I've avoided setting up thin client labs because I've used a lot of other thin client labs, and they frequently have bugs. The problems are the same if your thin clients are Windows or Linux. There are problems with USB

  • Re: Is the used computer market going away?

Hey Shipley, extremely well said. These are my own thoughts from years ago, and I have forgotten my own lesson. "My clients really won't need much training when I switch them from( one OS or PC to another ) They get a login screen, they click on icons, they print. They don't need to know much about the operating system to do their job."

I'm glad Jim wrote this article and included some data, however, we need more dialog about accelerating obsolecense by vendors like Microsoft and Adobe. Not to mention the MS MAR program for selling 2 copies of XP for one dang box, one by the OEM, then another the MAR recycler. Paying twice for an operating system that will be outdated by the next

  • Re: The hidden costs of windows security for non profits

Hi. It's 2009 and windows seems more vulnerable than ever. Once again users who have full protection are getting infected by surfing websites with that should be safe. However, the websites are powered by a windows server and the server is hijacked, spreading their virus to people who surf their website. In these infections, the browser is Internet
  • Re: Joomla for Nonprofits: What do you think?

I worked with Joomla. It's very hard to use at first, and even after weeks of practice it remains a pain. It's really hard if you want to control the layout, keeping important things at the top of certain pages. I used it for a high school newspaper website. I've got a CS degree and I've used some bad UI designs, and joomla takes the

Some newer and tougher viruses can't be detected by a computer. You or another human must inspect the computer by looking at the screen and looking for clues. The URL link below is one current way to check for one of these that is undetected on 1/2 million windows computers. http://www.confickerworkinggroup.org/infection_test/cfeyechart.html It

Hey Mr./Ms. Dwelp. Great advice on demoting most user logon accounts to "limited" in the control panel. I forgot that tip, and that it costs IT staff time to walk from PC to PC and apply the fix of "limited" user accounts. I hope MS will make that "limited" setting forced to be on in the next security updates. Speaking
  • Re: Best calendar applications for group planning?

Google calendar is quite amazing. There are many things in gcal that are not in other Microsoft offerings - gcal has an iphone application and more devices soon no doubt - gcal can be seen by anyone on the internet simply by sending them a link. To add events you simply have to logon to google using any email name. You do not need to use Gmail to add
