What to use with Server 2008

02-08-2010 1:26 PM

Just finished migration from Small Business Server 2003 to 2008 from Techsoup and went to install Symantec AntiVirus CE ver 9.0 also purchased from Tech soup and found it does not work on Server 2008. :(

Chatted with Symantec and they recommend their Endpoint Protection, which is also available from Techsoup.

But as I read the forum, and Symantec's forum, it appears to have major problems, which they may fix, but we as techsoup buyer we cannot access the fixes.

What other managed options should I consider, or is the D/L from Techsoup new enough that these fixes are included?

Thanks

Why would you not have access to the new features in the Endpoint 11 software?  You get software updates as well as subscription to definitions.  They may not have fixed the issues you point out specifically, but you do get the software fixes for the version you bought.

That being said, take a look at Eset NOD32 - take the time to call their sales department and ask for a non-profit discount.  You will get one.

From a thread re SEP just a few threads below this one labeled "Broken beyond repair":

I've contacted TechSoup on this a couple of times, but apparently Symantec plays hardball on this:  as near as I've been able to determine, what you get through TechSoup is what you get, and there's no provision to download updates or patches from Symantec to fix problems with the product.

True or false?

I'll check on Eset

thanks
