Tools I'm Thankful For

I was thinking to myself about the free or open source tools that are out there. Many of these have become ones that I rely on, often on a daily basis, to help me do my work. So in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I wanted to give a shout-out to several of my favorite open source and/or free tools that I am thankful for:

  • Mozilla Firefox, my browser of choice, free and open source, and of course some of the great Firefox add-ons tcreated by developers to share, that make Firefox even better
  • Evernote. The free version of this notebook is a versatile, useful tool that syncs across different computers and iPhone. The free version works well for me, but if you want further features and more storage, here's also a premium version at a reasonable $5/month.
  • Drupal. The open source content management system (CMS) that powers our NetSquared and Nonprofit Commons site with a large community of developers continuing to collectively improve it.

What free and/or open source tools are you thankful for?

Best,

Megan

I am very thankful for logmein.com.  I use the free version to work two days from home, which allows me to spend more time with my toddler.

Among "tools" I would include Linux, and the innumerable lesser tools that it allows you to incorporate.

For Windows I use many free tools, e.g.:

Audacity - digital audio editor

Kompozer - html editor

Notepad++

Ghostscript - interpreter for PostScript and PDF

InfraRecorder - one of several good optical disc burners

VideoLAN VLC media player

SUPER - Simplified Universal Player Encoder & Renderer. A GUI to FFmpeg, MEncoder, MPlayer, x264, musepack, monkey's audio, true audio, wavpack, ffmpeg2theora and the theora/vorbis RealProducer plugIn.

GIMP - GNU Image Manipulation Program

not open source, but free: Defraggler and CCleaner, Spybot S&D

Drupal - drupal.org

It keeps our clients happy. The power under the hood grows at an exponential rate; we can build more empowering projects every day for a lower price.

There are others, of course...CiviCRM, Linux, Firefox, Firebug, Android, GIMP, Kate.
