If you work for an organization where you deal with any client data that's health related or bills things like counseling, medical care, or other billing that would go to insurance companies, HIPAA guidelines (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996) might apply to your work.

So how do you select software that helps your organization meet these guidelines in order to protect the security and privacy of patients or clients and their information?

Do you have a recommendation of a HIPAA-compliant database? Or a great system that tracks who does what with your client information? How do you assign your user roles and permissions appropriately? Have you found a tool that gives you the flexibility you need to do your job while also meeting HIPAA guidelines?

Beyond software and databases, do you have any system that helps you develop the internal policies that staff need to adhere to? Where do you find your HIPAA-compliance advice?

Please share your recommendations, challenges, and software tools in this thread.

TechSoup has a new article this week that will give some recommendations as well. I'll post a follow-up link here once it's live!
