How do you pronounce ".org"

04-13-2009 5:49 AM

hi, let me ask how do you pronounce ".org" in english speaking society.

i am from Japan.

in Japan, there is no fixed pronunciation about ".org", but my friends try to pronounce like "dot Oh-law-goo(d)". (this is just Japanese familiar/friendly pronunciation but make no sence for english speakers.:)

my idea is just pronounce separately "dot 'O' 'R' 'G'".

sorry for unusual question for "Web Building" Community..

i really appriciate if someone give information.

Hi,

The ".org" is simply pronounced "dot-org", which really stands for "dot-organization".  People just pronounce the first three letters of the word, "org", which is the short form of "organization".  Just like ".com" is pronounced "dot-com", which is the short way of saying "dot-commercial".  Some people would also argue  that "dot-com could be taken to mean "dot-company", as well.

Nothing wrong with saying "dot O-R-G" by just pronouncing them as individual letters.

Hope this helps.

Yann

Just say "or-g" (or-jee).

People will laugh and it will be a good conversation starter.

Rog,

Remind me never to take language lessons from you... You might want to tell Matsuo why they would be laughing and what you have recommended he say.

thanks all you advice--.

i could understand Rog's idea nuance, it is some "ice breaking" thing, isn't it.
my main domain "adgj.net" is also strange one, but most of people understand
when they watch their mobilephne :)

from SEO point of view, Nonprofit-organization tend to chose ".org",
in general,  but , in japan, because people confuse with ".org"
pronunciation, some NPO chose ".net" or ".com" instead of.

Konbanwa,

.org is commonly pronounced in the US in a way that sounds like "oar-gah", but "gah" is very short, like gh.

rhymes with:

- cyborg or Bjorn Borg (Link goes to a page with an audio recording)
- morgue
- Korg (Japanese electronics company)

matsuatbct,

Rog was trying to be funny.  It is probably not a good idea to use his pronunciation as an ice breaker if you are talking to serious business clients.  What he is describing is usually sexual in nature.

Sorry, I do not know much Japanese, only enough to get me into trouble. :-)

I listened to your recording and it sounds correct, for Japanese. It reminded me of the word "milk" which I have heard pronounced as "mill-ku". Or "cheese" as "cheese-tsu".

I do not know where ... but it would be good to have a forum for TechSoup Asia/Pacific so we could all converse in a common (or at least close) time zone. Sydney and Tokyo are only 1 hour apart :-) ... maybe TechSoup Global could provide such a forum for Asia and Oceania?

The way the TechSoup forums are set up, each user can set the time zone individually, so the posting times are consistent with your time even with all of us posting at very different hours, given where we are in the world. However, we're in the process of getting TechSoup Australia up and running and that includes some community components, like localized forums! You can see the other countries where we have partnerships at http://www.techsoupglobal.org . If you don't see your country listed, drop us an email--we are adding new partners all the time and may have something in the works.

Best,

Megan
