Star [*] ONLINE EVENT: How to keep users engaged with the cause?

This is an issue that comes up with online social media sites, but also something I wonder about for mobile. How do you keep users engaged with your organization/cause after that first call to action? For example, you can ask a user to text a message out or donate to a campaign, but how do you keep users engaged in the cause afterwards and translate that mobile action into real-world action towards your mission?

Best,

Megan

Great question.  As always, there are no magic bullets here.  A few thoughts:

  • Good campaign strategy -- smart, strategic thinking about a ladder of engagement that integrates different channels
  • Smart thinking about conversion -- how do you get people to move from one platform to another. For example, NARAL (I am on their mobile list) has never asked me to sign up for their email alerts, or any other ask for conversion -- FAIL
  • Really understand what mobile is useful for and what not: immediate action that relates to something you can do on or with your phone, ile. make a call to a legislator, for example, turn out a specific time for a specific thing, watch a specific thing on TV that is relevant to the campaign, call into a radio show, etc.  Text messages calling for a discreet, timesensitive action work best.
  • Don't under message and don't overmessage -- understand message frequency, (obama messaged 5-20 times a month and had very good user profiles)
  • Understand how to construct a good ask in 160 characters.

This is just for starters ;)

I think that keeping various channels of mobile communication involved makes it interesting for the user-base, and therefore, more engaging. For example, employing, mobile video (live streaming it as well as sending videos to mobile users), mobile photo documentation, text to voice messaging, recorded voice interviews w/constituency, in the field as podcasts, etc.  What are the various channels to use with mobile activism and what are the best service providers to make these things happen (live 12seconds.tv, for example).
