I just heard about the release of
Wavemaker 4.0, an open source web development platform for AJAX applications. Wavemaker makes the claim that this is an easy way to create an AJAX application in just 9 steps.
This post demonstrates how.
Anyone using Wavemaker? Is it as easy as the claims? And how easy is easy (i.e. what tech knowledge do you need before you start to use it?)
Best,
Megan
I shouldn't even have to say this but any claim of being able to do meaningful development in just 9 steps is nonsense, much like the books that claim to teach one to speak Latin in 30 minutes.
The samples I saw were just simplistic front ends to existing relational databases (so the hard work had already been done), and I found that error trapping was weak.
It appears to be aimed primarily at developers, possibly for quick mockups more than for final applications.
It's certainly interesting but it's probably not the "quick answer" for most people's needs.

What?!? Next thing you're going to tell me is I can't have great abs in only 8 minutes. :wink;
Yes, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If you're a developer, this might be a good tool to know about. If you're wanting to learn web development, well, taking the longer-than-9-steps road is probably going to be what you really need.
Best,
Megan
Within that nine step program I did not see a single word dedicated to admitting you have a problem, dealing with project managers, gathering specs for the four billionth time, going over revisions requested by the customer, explaining why they can't have it yesterday, making sure it works on every browser under the sun, optimizing for mobile devices, etc.
The hardest part of computer programming is not the "computer" part. It is the "people" part. If people would just get out of the way, I could program at the speed of gossip.
As for the nine steps claim, you could argue that driving a car can be done in three: Get in, start it, and drop it into drive... You don't want to be on the streets among those drivers, and you probably do not want to surf websites built by people on a nine step program, either!
Tim:
So young to be so cynical!
I have to say that you've hit it on the head about people being the biggest impediment you run into when programming.
Wow... did I write that? :-)
True, True. If only we all could have a Tom Smykowski on staff...

:smile; LOL
(here's the
reference)
Believe it or not, our organization actually has something called a TPS report.
I snicker everytime someone asks for it.

Hello, I'm an accidental web site updater. I'm trying to find out if Wavemaker would work for our website. I need something not too difficult to edit already existing site. We just experienced a staff reduction and I don't even know where to start. Any ideas on effective software to assist me on my trek?
