Assuming you mean some sort of web index/directory, most any content management system (CMS) should do the trick. Here is a listing/rating of a number of free and open-source ones:

http://www.opensourcecms.com/

In particular, they do have a "Portals" section, which may be of some use.

These often require some techie know-how to get installed and properly configured, but once they are set up they can allow a lot of flexibility and ease of providing content.

You are looking for a directory script that will let you have a directory site something like what DMOZ.org offers.

We run a free copy of PHP DIRECTORY SCRIPT and if you like the style I can highly recomment it. We have been running an older version for about 4-5 years now and have close to 10,000 listings.

There are a number of these directory scripts out there both paid and free, and the most popular one is PHP Link Directory. I have tried it, and it's ok, but I like the first one much better and think it is easier to work with. It's also never been hacked as long as I have had it, where the PHPLD I had was broken in to and got messed up.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Mi Koo,

It looks like there is a fair bit of speculation as to what you mean by "directory". Can you give a concrete example? I bet we'll be able to point you in the right direction.

Best,
Matthew.

The directory is a contact membership directory which has search options (search by keyword, categories, and name)
I'd like to have this directory online as well as on CD.
by any chance, do you know if filemaker pro or MS access has functions to make such a online directory?

Thanks much :)

You could use filemaker pro or MS access to create an online directory, but it would be better to create one using MySQL, or to use an available application that already exists to provide what you want.

One problem is that you want this to be on a web site, but also on a CD. The way you access the information is different so I don't think you can use the same thing.

If you put the directory into web pages, then you could use something like the Zoom Search Engine and you would be able to search for information on the web site and on a CD.

Unfortunately you cannot use MS Access to create an online directory.

I think Christian meant to use Access as the back-end database, not the entire thing. You would still need some sort of web-based frontend.

Agree, though, there are much better databases out there for this kind of thing.
