Hi,
I'm a student in geography and I'm making a thesis with the Humanitarian Research Group in INSEAD school. The goal of my research is to show use of Geographical Information System in humanitarian operations in case of natural disaster. I'm looking for a case of study on:
- a very vulnerable area ( high density of population, low level of development...)
- a zone badly known by NGO where they would need more data and maps
- an area threatened by a natural risk with strong intensity and frequency
The goal is to make a thesis useful for humanitarians, that's why I'm looking for the more relevant field research I can find. All ideas and propositions are welcomed.

I would suggest that you check out http://www.humanitarianinfo.org/ it lists all the humanitarian information centre (HIC) sites as well as links to other GIS resources like SAHIMS and DEPHA. There have been HICs in several natural disasters but usually they are in complex emergencies. If you know Spanish you could also take a look at http://www.pnudguatemala.org/stan/index.htm they have maps that were produced after Hurricane Stan in 2005. Also WFP is doing some work on early warning see: http://www.wfp.org/newsroom/in_depth/early_warning
There has been a lot done with GIS in natural and man-made disasters in the last few years and more project are getting started every day. Good luck on your thesis.
