LinkedIn - good for nonprofits?

I recently joined LinkedIn at the request of someone in my Linux users group and am quite impressed.

The first time I dismissed it as being a sort of MySpace for adults, but playing around with it this weekend, I have come to really like the following features:

  • privacy: you can make your profile available for everyone (or no one) to see
  • Outlook integration: while I personally don't really care for Outlook, I often use it at work and appreciate how plug-ins make this integration easier. This integration is far less annoying than Plaxto (ugh).
  • Cool exporting features: you can slice and dice your exported list all sorts of ways or easily bring it in to applications like ACT!.
  • question / answer: posting a question seems to be a cool way to get a response from your network (up to 3 degrees, I believe).
  • cross platform: I often switch between Mac, Linux, and Windows. It's nice to have web-based tools like this and not have to be locked in to one vendor.

I'd be interested to know what others in the nonprofit world think about LinkedIn. Does it have nice "nonprofit" features? Or is it something that you use (just b/c everyone else is using it) and then have to supplement it with some other nonprofit-friendly online tool?

(If anyone would like an invite, please email me @ this trashmail address: oqwqkmyk@trashmail.net )

We actually covered this topic quite extensively in our online event on Online Social Networking This thread focuses on Using social networking apps for your nonprofit. They focus on Tribe and care2.com a lot. Here is another interesting thread on getting discovered. Finally, here is another topic that you may find interesting on online social networking.

We also have a TechSoup article on this topic What can social networking do for your organization.

HTH,

Susan

Very cool, thanks Susan. I'm a little late getting on this bandwagon. :)

Recently, one of my former classmate invited me to join to LinkedIn because I have been looking for a job or internship. It turns out very neat and I am having a few employers contacting me. It's a good website for everyone who want to be contacted by insiders, friends, professors, employers, etc.

I have had the same experience. On average, I get around 5-10 contacts a week for job requests. While I have about 100 contacts, the vast majority of people are old friends I know personally who really aren't into social networking sites. There are a couple of 500+ contacts who connect me with gazillions of other recruiters.

I've used quite a bit siunce 2004. At first for typical networking stuff and to keep my resume online. Recently, I've used for research projects and it has been quite useful.
I also sound great how-to pieces and blogs that focus on LinkedIn you might find of interest

Hi "AnnGalbraith",

I think you are in the wrong forum because your question were related to website stuff. But since you have already asked, I should give out the answer: You could use Microsoft Frontpage 2003 program to edit Japanese and Chinese text. In order to do this, you have to install these languages pack; or better off, you could use Japanese and Chinese keyboard which come with the driver itself.
