1000+ clients = what?

--1000 users on one LAN accessing the email server?
--1000 users around the global accessing the email server?
--1000 users total (e.g. 250 companies * 4 users per client)

Please be as detailed as possible. There might be a good dozen different good solutions for *each* scenario.

For this number of users I think you would wish to call for expressions of interest from providers and go to tender... be careful of accepting a base $ per-user-per-month figure as these are often quoted high innitially... a good provider will negotiate with you for 1,000 clients.

To get the best value from a tender process you need to provide estimates of message peak periods, volumes and quantities... i.e. it may be that the time difference between you and a certain host provider means your peak period is their off-peak period... this can be advantageous in terms of performance and may provide you with a discount rate!
