I'm having an issue with my 2 HP Vectra VL machines. Both of them take a longer than normal time to boot up. One machine has 484megs or ram and the other 384 but i don't think its a memory issue.

Jakos,

Could you please give us more information when you post a question? It will save all from having to ask you the normal questions:

- How much longer do they take to start up?
- When did the problem start?
- Are there any other problems?
- Did anything else change around that time?
- What version of Windows do you have?
- Do you have anti-virus software and what version?
- Do you have anti-spyware software and what version?
- Have you defragged your hard drives?
- How much free space does each hard drive have?

I know you work with computers a lot, so please take a little more time and make it easier on us, ok? :-)

Thanks,
Chris

How long have they had Windows installed? Could be bogged down by the registry, too.

Instead of the machines booting up in a few seconds it takes about 1 min. This prob has been going on for a while i just dealt with it. This is the only prob i'm having with these machines. I'm running XP Pro on both. Both of them have the latest version of AVG anti-virus and AVG antispyware along with Windows Defender, Spybot S&D and Ad Aware. I have defragged and the prob stil occurs. One machine has a 40gig hard drive with 30gigs of space and the other has 80gigs with 20 gigs of space.

What does your quick launch toolbar look like at startup? Do you have a bunch of programs opening up when you first turn your computer on? Go to start, run, and type msconfig Go to the startup tab and look at all the programs that are opening at startup. Before you uncheck anything, you should make sure that it is something that isn't needed to run.

I agree. The writer did not indicate which flavor of Windows is on the computer, but from a random check of "HP Vectra VL" support docs at the HP site (click here to see the Vectra VL series) it looks like these computers could have many flavors of Windows.

If you have Windows XP, part of the problem is that all of the patches and security updates since XP debuted have more than doubled the size of the Windows directory-- XP cannot run as fast as it did when new.

But regardless of which Windows you have, it's most likely the Windows registry which has become cluttered and possibly corrupted, so much like an over-cluttered office slows down your productivity, Windows is unable to work efficiently.

Some would recommend a full Windows reinstall as the best way to straighten out the registry, but I think that's a big pain. First I'd try one of the popular Registry optimization/cleaning utilities - you can view a pretty complete list with reviews at http://registry-repair-software-review.toptenreviews.com/. It costs some money, but your time is worth a lot, too, and slow computers destroy productivity.

Good luck! and report back...

I would take one PC, disable all the anti-spyware and other extra stuff and see how long it takes to boot. If that cures it then you can re-enable them to see if there is one thing causing the slowness or if it's just because there are so many things checking and updating.
