The price of video projectors has dramatically come down in price the last few years. Your consideration of what unit to get depends on what your presentation environment will be:
The number of people you will be presenting to at one time.
The size of the image you want on the screen (also related to the size of the room you are presenting in).
The distance from the screen to the projector.
The amount of ambient light in the room during the presentation.
What features do you need in the projector? (Multiple video sources composite, VGA computer, S-Video) Will you need to projector to play sound too?
You are better off seeking funding to buy the projector you need rather than looking for a donation of a projector, as the technology has also improved, and a projector you get donated may not work with the newer laptops, and may not have inputs for DVD or VCR.
I am more concerned about the relationship with a local dealer than with what projector I have. I want some one to call when it doesn't work, may provide a loaner while mine is being repaired, can help with instructions like how to reset the clean the filter message.
The local dealer may even be able to rent you a projector with option to purchase, so you can get started and buy their used projector that you've paid mostly for in rentals.
