Domain Name Registration

Hi. Is it necessary to change the registrant information for our domain name if the registrant is no longer interning at our NPO? Thank you.

It's not just necessary to change it, akami_gurl -- it's an absolute must!

This is because YOU must always maintain complete control over your domain name. To ensure this, your organization's name should be used as the owner of the domain. You can list different people as the technical and billing contacts, but again the owner of your domain should always be your organization.

People (especially interns!) come and go, and you NEVER want to leave ownership of your domain in the hands of someone who is gone.

So I'd advise you to update your domain registration info ASAP.

Thanks for bringing up this very important question!

Yes - DEFINITELY change it. And be sure to use email addresses that don't come and go - like an alias that forwards to a couple of POSITIONS (aka webmaster and "info") instead of fredtheintern@xyz.org

It gets pretty sticky trying to change registration info when people are gone, email accounts are closed etc. etc.

Keep the info current! Its good to do an occasional audit to make sure contact info is good and current. I've seen too many times when domains expired because of old email info. Then they had to pay extra because it had expired.
