The instructions posted by caoac are perfect.

One caveat. I recently had problems enabling extensions for a form that had fields created in Designer 7. Everything looked good including indication in Adobe Reader that the filled form could be saved. Save seemed to work but reopening the form showed nothing.

So the message is to fully test the feature before deploying.

There is a workaround but it's ugly. If you're really stuck contact me offline. howard@fillablepdfforms.com

As many others have said in this thread, there are 2 prerequisites: 1) You must create the form using Acrobat 8
2) Your users who are to save the form must have at least Acrobat Reader 7

So the abridged version is just to create the form in Acrobat 8. With the form open, go to Advanced-->Enable Usage Rights In Adobe Reader...

Depending up on the layout/creation of the form, you'll get hit with a screen that says Reader features will only be enabled for the main docment, not any attachments. As long as the form fileds were created in Acrobat, you'll be good. It's basically just saying that any background art/images you've used will not be able to be edited - only the fill-in areas, checkboxes, etc. created in Acrobat will be editable.

So click continue, then click save now and the resulting document will be able to be printed, saved once filled in, emailed, etc.

RE: Creating Print and Fill pdf forms

It is Possible and can be Done with Acrobat Professional. All that you have to do is Take the original and save each field and type of field.

In Fact going to Adobe.com and then to Acrobat Proffesional and then reasons to buy, the number one item on its list is:

Enable advanced features in Adobe Reader
Enable anyone using free Adobe® Reader® software (version 7.0 or 8) to participate in document reviews, fill and save electronic forms offline*, and digitally sign documents.

Offline. Means they should be able to download the file, fill it in and upload it back to you. Now downloading and uploading will be up to you how that is handled of course. Probably Uploading via email and downloading the file as a Link is not hard to do.

Hope this was Helpful

RE: Creating Print and Fill pdf forms

Try http://foxitsoftware.com/

RE: Creating Print and Fill pdf forms

Try Foxit Reader from Foxit Software
I am a programmer with experience in this area. You can use adobe to create fillable pdfs these are printable. There are a few options.

1. Create a webform that uses the itext plug in. This will allow the user to fill in all the data via a web site and then save a PDF at the end.
2. Use jetform with a database to create the pdf in house.
3. Use adobe pro to create the fillable PDF file and a program like PrimoPDF to print the form to a file and then have the client mail it in.

The last option is the easy one with very little work needed other than some good documentation to get the user to create and mail the form

RE: Creating Print and Fill pdf forms

[ This Thread ] may help answer some of the questions regarding the 500 limit.
But it was also stated here that it was a licensing issue.
This missing feature has really soured my taste of Adobe, but at least they are giving out something. I wonder how a form would know it was saved 500 times, especially if you emailed out a different copy each time. Is this thing communicating with some Adobe server?

RE: Creating Print and Fill pdf forms

This is Adobe's bread and butter and you can make fillable/saveable forms that someone with just acrobat reader can use. When I checked into it last is you had to purchase a special server to enable the save feature in a PDF. They intentionally leave it out. The catch is this thing is crazy expensive. They wanted something like 5k for a single document then a yearly subscription to keep it savable like the IRS forms. The other option is to buy the server but if I remember correctly that was like 50k plus.

You can always buy Adobe Acrobat 8 for every computer you want to be able to save but what a waste of money. If you have to buy everybody software, just stick with open office or MS office.

PDF is such a cash cow for Adobe, it is sited as the compelling reason they purchased Macromedia when the released flash paper (an alternative solution).

RE: Creating Print and Fill pdf forms

I've seen the 500 save limit mentioned on the web before. Where is that documented? How would that work? 500 times for one copy? If a bunch of people download a form, I can't imagine how the forms can communicate to limit total saves to 500.
