Hopefully, a lot of these recommendations will also help the organizations save money since they won't have to pay for the travel. Our ultimate goal is to get organizations to make changes so their green house gas (ghg) emissions from commuting and other travel will be reduced.

I know that a lot of you out there have great collaborative technology solutions that have worked for you. If you have short suggestions that would benefit others, please write about them here.

My organization has two potential projects which both include some level of document management, and both need to enable multiple users to view, share and edit documents. Our first project is well on its way, and we will be using MIP Fund accounting software. However, MIP does not meet the needs of the second project since this involves more than accounting and purchasing. Fortunately, MIP says that it can integrate with other mission-vital software within an organization. So, my question is, are there any document management systems that can integrate with MIP accounting software? SharePoint is most likely not what we will be using. Thanks for your help.

I am beginning to begin to plan the planning for the entire database and website overhaul, completely redesigning the site and incorporating CRM into our office work flow, etc. and am trying to figure out ballpark numbers for cost and time of the entire process. Since there are going to be consultants, developers and perhaps even designers involved in this, when asked by development how long and how much the whole process will cost, I won't have any specific numbers until well into the RFP phase.

It looks like most of our software will be "free" (ignoring total costs) for both the site and CRM, but there will be a good deal of developer and consultant costs, and I am trying to figure out at least what to expect with that.

Also, we are giving ourselves 18 months to 2 years to really do the whole thing in general. However, I am hoping to get general info regarding how long I can actually expect this to take.

I am well aware that this is a huge question which is totally reliant on specific specs, but I have no idea where to place cost and time brackets: $20,000 over 6 months or $200,000 over 3 years, no idea what to expect (although I have an idea about what we can afford haha)

Any help or input would be appreciated.

Do you have a data warehouse?

This week, TechSoup will be featuring a new article from Idealware about data warehousing and the questions to ask about whether your organization needs one or not.

I'm running an all Windows shop, consisting of about a dozen servers (W2k3 & 1 W2K8). 2 of these servers are VMWare.

All storage is to disk, with a couple of direct attached drives (WD MyBooks).

Backup is Disk-to-Tape using a 70GB Rev Drive and CA ArcServe r11.

I'm trying to think of a new solution from the ground up. This needs to tie into a complete disaster recovery solution. I have recently obtained Backup Exec 12.5. I need a solution that works now and takes into account future growth.

So, I'm looking for suggestions on hardware, software, etc. SAN? NAS? Cloud? I'm open to any ideas. Ease of implementation and manageability are always a plus. Of course, cost is always a concern (we are a non-profit).
Does your organization have a plan to keep your technology, data, and assets protected in the event of an emergency or disaster? What if it's not an actual disaster like a hurricane or flood, but a staff member simply loses or breaks a laptop carrying essential supporter data? How much time or money might your organization spend trying to recover even a fraction of what's been lost? If these questions have crossed your mind and your answers are less than ideal, you should join us for our two-part webinar series on disaster planning to protect your technology.

We'll discuss the ins and outs of getting your organization in tip-top shape before a disaster or crisis happens. I have been looking online for RFP job posting sites that cater to non-profit work and have been unseccessful in finding any. Per our funding requirements I must ensure a fair and open process for proposals for this project.

Does anyone know of any sites out there that would help me post my RFP to the correct audience? I would also love responses from other non-profits who have been through a similar process or that are currently using a web-based grant management CRM product.

VMware Consolidation

Hi all,

I'm a new Network admin for a medium-sized Nonprofit, about 140 users, 5 Servers, various other network hardware. I was looking into consolidating from 5 servers to 2 using VMWare ESXi 4, and having 1 server running all 5 current ones virtually, and having a hot failover capability on a 2nd Server with the same VM's allready configured and mirrored from the Primary Server. Anyone have experience with this? and know of reliable and cost-effective Vendors?

We're a small nonprofit group with a small headquarters and the majority of full-time employees working out of their homes. Not all of the from home employees have great Internet access.

The options we've looked into include:

1) Buying a Server and installing Windows Server or Samba

2) Using JungleDisk for file storage

3) Microsoft Groove

- The Mac users have to dual boot to use it

4) Dropbox

We already use Google Docs for collaborative editing but want to be able to have a place to store files as well.

Our primary requirements are that the solution provide:

- Mac, Windows support

- Versioning

- Security

- Offline Access

Are there other options we should be considering? Has anyone else already done this type of evaluation?

Thanks,

The full report (PDF) came out earlier this month and after looking through it, I'd have to say I wasn't all that surprised to learn that many nonprofits are spending less than 1% of their budget on IT and tech each year.

I've blogged about some of the other highlights of the report but would love to open the discussion to get other people's thoughts on the report as well as on how nonprofits are or aren't adopting tech planning into their budget process. Aside from that, it would help TechSoup to know more about what other nonprofits NEED from us in order to help them find solutions to their tech/IT problems.

With many of the more than 1000 nonprofit respondents saying that they rely on volunteers, other nonprofits, and personal experience to help solve IT problems, I know that there are things we at TechSoup can be doing better to help get the technology into the hands of nonprofits who need it and help them figure out how to use it.

What do you think? Check out the survey results (PDF) and post your thoughts here in response to what you've read and suggestions of what we can all be doing better.
