Greetings,
I am Kathy Gower, chair of a new non-profit that serves once and future pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago in Spain, a medieval pilgrimage route. In fact, as I type ths Jenna Bush, of all people, is making the pilgrimage and should arrive in Santiago soon.
I have a PhD but am not associated with any school so it is very difficult to set up a list-serve that isn't yahoogroups with all of the advertising. A former list serve, GoCamino, out of University of RI is defunct and I would love to take up the slack for our mailing list of almost 1,000.
We are a registered 501(c) (3) so hopefully I can access some free tech advice or a willing server. The list-serve would have topics ranging from equipment, culture, accomodations and route maps, plus questions from the participants.
My dissertation was on the reincorporatin of pilgrimage experiences and one of the most compelling ways pilgrims integrate their experiences is by talking about them with others who share similar experiences.
I hope there's someone out there that can give advise as to how to set up a new list-serve for those who are now drowning in silence.
muchas gracias,
Kathy

There are a number of yahoo-like services that are free or inexpensive for non-profits. The two that com to my mind are Groupport at
http://www.groupport.org and the lyrically named Electric Embers at [
http://elctricembers.org
I haven;t used these servcices, but from reading their material they seem very much like yahoo w/o the ads.
hope this points you in a useful direction.

P.s. Jenna Bush!!??
Hi Kathy,
You may want to check out
FreeLists. They provide free mailing lists that are not support by advertisements.
There may be additional resources on our
Online Community Building Tools resource list.
Hope that helps!

Kathy,
As a peregrino who has a compostela and a subscriber to gocamino, I would like to be of some assistance if possible.
