Old computers and CRT monitors

01-04-2010 6:53 PM

Hi ,

Not sure if this is the right place for this post, are there still organizations that are willing to take old CRT monitors(17 inch)  and some older pentium desktop computers?

the company that I work at currently has about 20 old crt monitors to get rid of.  Its just eating up space in our server room and storage area.

We hate to just toss it.

Thanks

Simon

I would make some calls to non-profits in your area. The cost to ship them anywhere may not make it worthwhile, so someone close may make the most sense.

A local computer dealer may know of a NP that is short on equipement.

In the end it depends on how usable the old machines are and what standards the NP has. Good Luck!

If you strike out with other ideas, you might consider placing an ad on your local Craigslist stating that you are interested in donating the equipment (or giving it away to anyone).

Of course, if you follow this route, you will want to perform due dilligence with regard to protecting the data that may still be on the hard drives, etc.

CRT monitors may be difficult to get rid of in bulk.  At home, I replaced 2 CRT monitors with older LCD monitors that the office was getting rid of in an upgrade.  I put them on craigslist as free with no takers.  I had to put them on the lawn with a free sign.  They were gone in a few hours.  As far as the systems, we have donated some of our older working systems to a prison that refurbishes them ,using inmates, to donate to local families that can not afford a computer.  The machines that we don't want to donate, we sell to employees for eBay market value.

I was able to drop off CRTs, printers, desktops and an old UPS at a Goodwill/Easter Seals location.  They'll give you receipts, too.  Check them out.  No charge for my area, maybe yours is the same.  And don't forget the Staples free Dell-branded recycling, too.  ($10 for each item not Dell branded)

If you put them in the yard, make sure you put a sign saying $10 rather than "Free". You won't get ten bucks, but the stuff will disappear MUCH faster!!!!

And yes, I know this from experience.

you can check out local government agency for e-waste.  Usually city will host event for e-waste/hazard waste drop off for free.  As you may already know, CRT contain high level of lead and other hazard material.  You shouldn't put in the trash.  It also may be illegal for dump electronic in trash too.  (at least in California is illegal)

if you are really interested to donate your pc you better check out for someone in your surrounding area who is really in need of it and can not afford to buy a new one.
