Overview

As Managing Director of Misnomer Dance Theater, you will contribute heavily to the success of an innovative, award-winning company recently selected as one of ten arts organizations nationally to participate in the “Leading for the Future” initiative launched by the Nonprofit Finance Fund. In this satisfying and demanding position, you will manage all aspects of day-to-day administration, and work closely with Creative Director Chris Elam and Misnomer’s volunteer leadership to guide the company through a period of very rapid organizational and financial growth. You will work hands-on in a fast-paced, ambitious environment, and Misnomer's success will be your success. In addition to bringing this enterprising and growing young dance company to the next stage, your work will influence the development of Misnomer's new Audience Engagement Platform (AEP) initiative, designed to serve as a resource to the arts field at large. The Managing Director position is an anticipated multi-year, career-developing commitment.

Duties

  • Manage all aspects of Misnomer Dance Theater's day-to-day administration
  • Manage the company financials and budget
  • Oversee and coordinate all other core company functions, including scheduling, booking, marketing and development
  • Manage, develop, and provide direct oversight of office staff, interns and volunteers
  • In consultation with Creative Director, serve as liaison to volunteer leadership, including board and advisory council
  • Drive communications strategies through our e-newsletter, company website, social networks and other media
  • Accelerate Misnomer's use of technology to engage and cultivate highly-involved audiences


Skills/Experience Requirements

  • Highly detail-oriented
  • Highly flexible, patient, fun-loving personality
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to work until the job is done (full-time+)
  • Experience in writing content, publishing e-newsletters, managing staff schedules and calendars
  • Very comfortable with technology:
    • Advanced Excel skills
    • Intimate working knowledge of social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) and online user interaction experience
    • Knowledge of (or competence to quickly learn) CRM software and QuickBooks
  • Financial skills:
    • Experience in working within and managing budgets
    • Financial modeling experience (improving, adjusting, recommending changes using existing spreadsheets)
    • Expertise in (or competence to quickly learn) tax documentation, payroll, benefits
  • Excellent communication skills (listening, understanding, responding, managing, conveying the vision)
  • Good writing skills (professional emails and informal web-based tone)
  • Preference given to candidates with:
    • Proven track records in non-profit organizational development (board recruitment, individual campaigns and major donor cultivation, institutional fund-raising)
    • History of success in developing and maintaining administrative protocols and processes
    • Confidence and familiarity with emerging organizations undergoing growth and transition
    • Past artistic experience

A small company with a big reputation, Misnomer is an innovative, fast-paced mover-and-shaker in the arts world. Named for creating one of the top ten dance performances in NYC for 2006 by The New York Times and selected as one of the "25 to Watch" for 2007 by Dance Magazine, Misnomer has performed in over 250 theaters in eight countries, collaborated with a range of artists from Bjork to the Danish Dance Theatre, and has been the subject of mini-documentaries by the Sundance Channel and Apple Computers. AEP Snapshot

AEP (Audience Engagement Platform) is a technology initiative of Misnomer, Inc. intended to dramatically reduce the barriers to audience participation and social involvement in the arts. AEP is currently in the design stage, but already AEP’s relationships in the arts, business, and technology communities run deep. The AEP intiative has and will be presented widely at major conferences, including FORTUNE Brainstorm: Tech and PopTech. AEP has already attracted major articles and media attention from news sources, including the The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Fast Company. Chris Elam and the non-profit Misnomer Dance Theater have incubated, popularized, and developed AEP to its current stage.
