If You Had to Purchase New Enterprise Antivirus Right Now...

I am researching an enterprise antivirus solution.  Back in March I asked which Norton Antivirus you would use.  This was because I thought our NPO would qualify for Techsoup purchases, and it will.  But the rest of our org may not because it is not an NPO (it's govt).  So since we will have to pay full price, I am open to considering any enterprise antivirus solution and would greatly appreciate anything you have to share on the subject.  Just antivirus; no security suites.

I searched and read postings here about different products.  Glamontagne was reserching AVG's Enterprise version, any further developments there?

In the past I used NAV Enterprise and the cost and bandwidth hogging made us change to Sophos Ent.  'Course this was NAV Ent 7.5 so they may have worked out the bandwidth issue since then...  We found that Sophos Ent used very little bandwidth because the engine ran on the clients.  But we had problems ensuring that all clients were clean from the console; sometimes we had to visit the client to remove an infection.

We currently use AVG Free - don't ask - not my idea and I'm trying to correct it.  We are peer-to-peer, 250 clients, 10 servers.   Many of our clients only have 256MB RAM, Pentium III's.  Servers are NT, 2k and 2k.

Sounds very fun!  I would be looking at NOD32 by eset.com - they provide a 50% discount to non-profits that they may or may not extend to gov't.

I agree with checking out NOD32 and I think AVG has and administration console also.  The Third one to check is Kaspersky, it also has an administration kit and the workstation security can be installed with as little as anti virus protection to the full blown security package.  I had very favorable NPO pricing 2 years ago and have over a year on my license yet.

On the P III machines you will need a very small foot print solution.

You may want to consider perimeter protection, such as the AV solutions bundled with the Untangle firewall and blocking by DNS restrictions so that you can get by with a lighter weight client solution.

I am greatful for the feedback. We received a grant and senior mgt has listened to my recommendations so I want to strike while the iron is hot. But I also want to look before I leap!

You might check out Avira too.  They've got a range of AV products for networks.
