FOG imaging software

Is anyone currently using FOG to image servers and workstations?  Need information, want to start a linux server for this purpose.

I use clonezilla but its works similarly to FOG about the same way. What is your question?

ewj, are you using the server edition of clonezilla?

Yep. I use it mostly for backup/restores because I tend to play with Linux and when it breaks I am usually prefer just to restore.  I use it with a older IBM laptoprunning Ubuntu  and older Dell server running redhat.

I think FOG gives you more features than the Clonezilla Server - which for ewj's purposes it doesn't sound like is needed.  But I'm pretty sure that you can use FOG to distribute Apps and Printers to already installed Windows machines, among other things.  I'm not sure Clonezilla Server does or doesn't offer that.  ewj?

I'll be setting up FOG on a virtual machine with database and storage on external USB.  Then I can bring my FOG implementation with me to any client's place on a laptop or keep running it at my home office.

I just start use FOG.  so far, I like it.  I set the server up on VM using Ubuntu.  just follow the instruction.  also change DHCP option for network boot as well.

Hello,

Just got my fedora 9 on a very old machine.  I intent on useing a usb hard drive for the storage of the images.  I have fog installed.  I can't find a clear point of where to start.  Here are the immediate issues:

I made a static ip address, 192.168.100.223, for machine, but when I look at the home page of fog, I see an ip address of 192.168.100.58, which is in my DHCP pool.  So I don't know why this is picking up this address

Do you have to install a client on each machine?

Its on my agenday to tackle this month (read: I haven't touched it yet) - you might want to check in the support forums for the FOG software directly.  :)  Best of luck.

Keep me posted, as I am starting the struggle today.

Shipley.c does FOG allow you to clone systems with different drive sizes? (e.g. If the source image was from a box with a 10GB hard drive would that expand to fill a system with a 40GB hard drive)? We're currently using Norton Ghost and I'd prefer to use an open source solution.

I can't answer that question yet, but I do know that if you used a 10GB image and put it on a 40GB drive, you could then use an open source producted like gparted to resize the image after (if it weren't something already built into FOG).

I think you could.  when you creat image, you will have option to create image with expand drive.(single partition only)

I work for a small IT shop where we have used too many solutions for cloning, from one off drive clones requiring pulling the individual drives to Clonezilla, Symantec, etc. One of our brainier dudes discovered FOG and we've used it many different ways so far. The first iteration was a standalone laptop with Ubuntu (no GUI) which required a separate machine to web into the laptop. This was a network system which was capable of single unit and multicasting (a hub yielded much higher image times than even a Gigabit switch). Our current versions are laptops (for portability) and servers with Ubuntu 9 full install which you can web into or run from the same machine. With them we have successfully pulled and pushed every size (from about 3GB to 200GB) and type (Windows 98, 2000, XP, and Vista) of image imaginable with great success. Our new project is a USB drive that can be plugged into any machine and used in the same manner. This will eliminate the need and expense for a dedicated laptop for mobile applications. I haven't been involved in the latter so I don't know how it's going, but I'm about to build one for myself. The FOG/UBUNTU combination is by far the easiest and best solution I've used so far. If you have questions I can answer I be happy to follow up on the post.

I can't seem to locate the fog client .exe to put on the machine.  what is the best way to do that?  We have just started using fog in a non-profit healthcare facility.  Needed to cut the costs and not use ALTERIS.   but I am not good at this yet, would like to keep the conversation going about this.  I need practice and someone to ask questions to?  hope you don't mind?

Yeah... all of my plans to implement FOG fell by the wayside since Clonezilla is taking care of what I need for now so there was no need to fix it.  Sorry I couldn't be more help.  I still plan to implement FOG, but my needs are still very simple and we're used to move image files around with hard drives and are only using the imaging features at this point.
