Belarc Advisor "substitute?"

10-20-2008 8:11 AM

My nonprofit has 8 Windows machines (7 XP Pro, 1 Server 03). I need a free inventory tool a la Belarc Advisor or Everest Home Edition. I'd use those programs, except their license agreements clearly prohibit use by nonprofit organizations.

I am NOT looking for network inventory tools like SpiceWorks - just something simple that runs on one machine.

Does anyone know of such a creature?

Thanks!

I seem to remember another thread here that the poster contacted Belarc and talked to them about using the free too in the non profit and they granted them permission. So you may want to call Belarc and discuss your situation.

Belarc use

Will do, and will also post Belarc's response.

BTW, the link you provided to the past thread is a great read, thanks.

Yep, that was me. And they've never turned me down when I asked to use it for a non-profit.

HI,

I emailed Belarc about this and quickly got a response. This is what they said:

    Hi Sasha,

Thanks for your note. We have allowed many non profits to use our Belarc Advisor product. However we ask all non profits that are interested to send us a request with information about themselves such as a url and the number of computers that they plan to install the Advisor on. We will then follow up with a reply. Requests should be sent to info@belarc.com.

    Best regards,
    Sumin

Belarc did indeed grant us a license for Advisor. They asked that we mention Belarc as a donor on our website, as well as include a link.

Thanks everyone.

Good news on your Belarc.

Myself, I've taken to running msinfo32 on XP machines. A benefit is the info can be exported. It's also easy enough to run that remote users can export the info to a file and send, periodically.

And, fyi, another option is Sandra Lite. I haven't used it in a while but I remember switching to it from Belarc, but can't remember why.
