Hey, it's a top ten list.

So my top ten things I love about FOSS right now:

- Bacula
- Ubuntu 8.04LTS
- Mint Linux
- Microsoft NOT buying Yahoo!
- Slashdot (of course!)
- Logical Volume Management
- Mozilla Songbird
- Zoho Creator (now with SSL!, and yeah not really FOSS)
- OpenOffice Database - Sun Report Builder
- Timevault (kind of like Time Machine for Linux)

I could probably think of a few more, but hey - it's not a top fourteen list!

Cheerio,

Yay! Who says Letterman is the only one with "Top 10" lists? Here's a few more of my favorites:

--Firefox
--Thunderbird
--PDF Creator
--Audacity
--Revo

What about you? Add to the list here!

Asterisk
FreePBX
PuTTY
WebMin
KompoZer
WinFF
7Zip
There are others that I don't use much, or that are already listed, so I'm not listing.

So there are lots of free tools I use daily :) Many of these are things I would recommend to any/all eriders.

[ulist]
- truecrypt
- keypass
- gimp
- hamachi
- wireshark
- vistumbler/netstumbler
- freemind
- SUPER (erightsoft)
- videolan
- cygwin
- unison
- blogdesk
- gmer
- treepie
- camstudio
- daemontools
[/ulist]

What had been on my list is SpyBot though now it is only free for personal use. Office use costs something though you need to try hard to find that.. :(

I like this topic! Here are some of mine:

-- Firefox
-- EssentialPIM
-- AVG Free

Anyone know of some good freeware encryption utilities to secure data on a USB drive? I noticed TrueCrypt was mentioned... any others?

No one has posted some of my favorites, which save our small non-profit a TON and allow us to turn out professional-grade in-house graphics and materials.

* GIMP
* Scribus (desktop publisher)

Personally, I can't live without...

-jAlbum - for photo albums we host on our Web host
-pixie - to help figure out the hex for a color
-Flexible Renamer - renames chunks of files at one time
-FontList - prints list of fonts on system
-Multiple IE's - great for getting the css bugs out
-Firefox, Firebug add on - makes those "what if" css design questions easy to ask.

Thanks to awetz for elaborating a little on the tools that are useful!

Thanks!

As long as you are in here talking about freebies, I am looking for a good remote desktop management solution. Our non-profit is located in 5 counties and it would be very nice to remote in to users to see their system when there are problems. Any good suggestions?

You could use Yugma for remote desktop. It is free for less than 10 users. It is designed for web conferences, but sharing desktops is one of its features.

For remote control there are many free versions in the family

I like Ultra VNC

Be sure to also check out CrossLoop. Very easy to use, quick setup. Fit for people of all skill levels, but an especially good choice for non-techies.

My top 10

- Ubuntu Linux (and all the goodnees that comes with it): http://www.ubuntu.com/

as far as individual programs

- Scribus (DTP goodness): http://www.scribus.net/

- Inkscape (Illustrator like goodness): http://www.inkscape.org/

- Quanta Plus (I'm a web programmer): http://quanta.kdewebdev.org/

- SuperDuper (Macintosh clone/backup, excellent): http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html

- OpenOffice.org (the draw portion is way underrated): http://www.openoffice.org/

- Linux/Apache/MySQL/Apache (the LAMP stack as it is referred) a DB programmers dream team for making web apps: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LAMP_(software_bundle)

- FamFamFam silk icons - hundreds of 16x16 pixel icons that all work together for web pages: http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/silk/

- A graphical diff compare for files and/or complete directories!: http://meld.sourceforge.net/

- KFileReplace (part of Quanta), global text search/replacement to a file and/or directory tree (if you are a programmer you will know.): http://kfilereplace.sourceforge.net/

The nice thing about FLOSS is it's at its core are a lot of developers helping make life better for themselves and other developers.
