WINE

I'm wondering if anyone is using WINE? Have you found it to be compatable with your Apps? In particular I'm thinking about installing the MS Office Suite (yes I know about Open Office already...) and Performance Now.

I have not used it since much more than a year, when I found it somewhat lacking. I've been thinking, with MS's mandatory, but guarded, release of APIs, that WINE might get some benefit by osmosis, and there has been a slew of new versions over time, so I'm about to try it again. There was a new version 0.9.55 released Feb. 8, but Sourceforge does not yet have builds for most distros. I've grabbed the source code, but I don't expect to get around to it immediately. Even then, I'm not going to install MS Office, so I will never be able to answer your specific question.

For the best results with MS Office you'll want to look at the CrossOver product from CodeWeavers .
They have tuned Wine with respect to Office and other software and provide tools to help the setup. CrossOver Office has been around for several years and they are pretty good at catching up to the moving target. With respect to running any particular software under CrossOver or regular Wine you want to check the appropriate web site for information. Follow the Read More link on the CodeWeavers site for what CrossOver supports.

For Wine go to the Wine HQ site. Follow the AppDB link on the left for a listing of what people have gotten to run with Wine. I've had mixed results with certain software. The straight forward stuff seems to work ok.

I'll second Jack's recommendation of Codeweaver's CrossOver Office. I first used the product 4 or 5 years ago when I was running Xandros Linux (it came with the distro). I was pleasantly surprised at all it ran. It even loaded Internet Explorer! There were some bugs of course, none of which come to mind except IE crashing everytime I went to Hotmail (no big deal).

Gents,

Thanks for the assistance and responses. I'll be checking out the CrossOver office.

Jesse - in particular I'm wondering how this release from MS will impact. It sounds like the company is finally looking at Open Source as a viable competitor to their products.

In my last non-profit we used WINE to run some ancient, niche, educational apps.
