Hi there--

Our article A Beginner's Guide to Facebook might be a good place to start, as it gives some examples of how organizatons are using Facebook. There are some additional articles on using online social networking tools which might be helpful as well.

You also might want to check out the winning causes from the recent Causes Giving Challenge on Facebook, as this can give you some ideas of how organizations are effectively using Facebook. Even though the challenge was fundraising, the goal was also to see how organizations could best leverage social networking tools to build awareness and support for their cause, so looking at these top organizations could give you some ideas.

Hope this helps get you started!

Best,

Megan

Right, I've read (I think) just about all the posts and articles written via TechSoup and others.

I guess I'm trying to figure out if its more effective to create a Facebook profile for the Organization or just a group or just a Cause? Or all 3?

A cause works best for a call-to-action of limited duration, while a group works best for developing continuously deepening engagement around a persistent concern, particularly when built around a series of group-related events or episodic media

Either of these is better than maintaining an organizational profile. Why have friends for an organization when you can have members?

The challenge of making the group attract, register, engage, and motivate membership remains similar to other tools for organization building in the proprietary site and offline world. Getting people to collaborate still takes much more than simply having the tools in place and ready to use.

Let's keep our hearts invested in building real collaboration with compelling messages, images, and relationships.

I think as well, that people will engage in a social network if there is it consistent, informative and engaging.

However, people will engage in ANY social network if they feel the passion of that social cause, be it environment, health, global or local.

If the cause itself is presented in a meaningful and passionate, engaging way, I would be more apt to jump on the bandwagon.

This is where technology can 'enhance' a cause, and leverage its existing purpose, and communicate the passion of those who believe.

My two cents...

Being a motorcyclist my favorite has to be Biker's World http://www.bikersmotocycles.com they have some pretty kewl personal web pages that are free and have pretty much all the features of the bigger sites (friends list, photo galleries, blogs, etc.).
They also have a new site at http://www.bikersworldus.com but the membership section is built on IPBoard Forum and doesnt have the personal web pages that were so kewl.

The also have an actual store in Hurricane. I'm form Las Vegas myself, but love Zion National park so I've stopped into there store a few times on my way thru. Everyone seems really friendly and they have a Club, Freedom Riders. I would join, but I just dont get a chance to get up there often enough.

Anyway, if you are into motorcycles you should check them out.

We started with yahoo groups, then we built our own. Now we are using facebook.com. We also started using twitter, it is not a social network, but good way to publish micro activities around our events and news
