Trying to find compatible RAM

02-05-2007 11:25 AM

I'm building a computer and I'm trying to find the right RAM to fit my new motherboard. I've ordered my parts from newegg.com but their support won't help us as far as getting the correct part. The motherboard I have is an Intel® Desktop Board D946GZIS. Can anyone give me the correct specs for the RAM that will fit. This is very frustrating.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Confused.

Have you tried checking the Intel website for the specs for your board? That's probably the first place to check.

You board supports 240-pin DDR2 SDRAM. I don't know if I am allowed to point you to any specific site but you could try here.

Hey confused, here is a link to a few options that Crucial has to offer. They also show you the specs of your motherboard, like that it only comes with 2 slots for memory, etc. Good luck finding what you need.

Thanks everyone for your help. I'll check out the two websites. I greatly appreciate your help. Have a great day..

I found the right memory for my new motherboard thinking that was the problem but I'm still not getting anything to boot. I have the correct processor(Core Duo), cables are connected appropriately but I can't figure out why it will not boot. Went to intel's support website and I've double checked the every possible avenue. Any further help?

A few things to check: Pin layout of the power button wires to the motherboard, is the processor fully seated?, does the power supply have a test button on it? What happens when you try to turn it on?

Make sure you have power plugged into all the connectors. If I remember correctly some Intel mobo's have a 2nd +5/12v connector between the cpu and the back of the case. (Your Powersupply might not support the extra power connector.)

Ahhhh, that's the problem. I had the wrong power supply. I ordered the correct power supply. Hopefully I receive it tomorrow. Thank you sooo much for your input. Wish me luck!!

I thought the power supply was my problem and got the correct one but I'm still getting the same results. I checked the processor and it's properly seated(checked three times),fan also. Re-checked my pin connections to hd, floopy, and cd writer. All are good. Also, found that my memory was not properly seated so I corrected that problem but no such luck. When I turn the pc on nothing starts, I just see the light on, on the MB, that's a good sign the motherboard is functioning!? I don't see a test button on my power supply. Where would that be? The type I just got is a Linkworld LPG2-43-P4-IO ATX12V 630W Power Supply, Memory: Kingston 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory, Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe 1.86GHz 2M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor, Standard floppy, CD writer. Everything is connected where it's supposed to be. I'm lost. I went to the intel website and downloaded every troubleshooting doc they had. Any other suggestions.

I realize what my problems was, when installing the motherboard I forgot to put in the standoffs first. Now the processer and my PSU is working. But the floppy, CD and hdd are still not running. I have the CD and hdd on the same cable connection. Could that cause a conflict?

I prefer to have them on seperate cables, saves a lot of troubleshooting.

It's not a good sign that all three are not working. I say that because without MB standoffs the bottom of the MB may have been contacting the metal case and may have shorted out a number of connections.

But I would disconnect the CD to start with and check the cable connections and the connectors closely to see if you can spot anything that doesn't look right.

Make sure the HD has power and see if you can hear it working when you power up. If if works, then you may have a conflict with the CD. If you are using a ribbon cable then I think one will have be set to Master and one to Slave. I'd make the CD the slave. As was suggested, it would be best to put the CD on it's own cable, but it's not a big deal in most cases.

If the HD doesn't work try just the CD alone. If that doesn't work, then you MAY have a MB problem. You can try another HD connector on the MB to see if that works.

If you also can't get the FD to work, then I would say it's something with the MB, but try both connectors on thr FD cable.

Good Luck!

New MB but same problems??????

Ok I went out and bought a new MB but the same type:

MoBo: Intel Desktop Board D946GZIS
PSU: Linkworld LPG2-43-P4-IO ATX12V 630W
Memory: Kingston 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory,
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe 1.86GHz 2M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor,
Standard floppy, CD writer
Seagate 250 GB harddrive.

I installed it carefully with the standoffs in place. I connected the hdd first. I do hear the hdd moving but I don't get a POST beep. When I connect the cd and floppy, they do not work at all, but I still hear the hdd moving. The CPU and PSU fans start up fine. Any suggestions?
