Software assurance - Vista and Office 2007

01-30-2007 2:57 AM

We already own several licenses for Vista and Office 2007 - due to software assurance on a previous purchase. We have downloaded the software for both now.

We need to buy more licenses for Vista and Office 2007. But they're not available yet on techsoup.

So if we buy more licenses for XP and Office 2003, will those automatically and immediately give us the right for the same number of licenses for Vista and Office 2007?

The original 2 year period that we had is now up. So we'd be starting a new 2 year period of software assurance with the purchase of XP and Office 2003 now. I'm just wondering how to obtain MORE licenses now before techsoup have Vista and Office 2007 for sale in second quarter?

thanks

Hi Malcolm,

Thank you for your interest in Windows Vista. We have recently learned that we will be able to offer this product in the very near future, rather than in the second quarter. No exact ETA, but I recommend checking back on our site frequently, and signing up for the New Product Alert e-newsletter.

In the meantime, Software Assurance will indeed cover the upgrade from Windows XP to Windows Vista (as well as from Office 2003 to Office 2007). By requesting additional Microsoft licenses, you will initiate an additional 2 years of Software Assurance, and be able to contact Microsoft for the upgrade. Please see this link for more details on Software Assurance:

Thank you,

Will you continue to offer Windows XP here on TechSoup after Windows Vista is available?

Software assurance usually includes downgrade rights. Buy purchasing the Vista licenses, you will be able to instead install Windows XP instead. All you will need to do is request the CD media for XP from Microsoft ($20). They should have it and allow this for as long as Windows XP is still supported by Microsoft (several years).

Thanks! That's very helpful.

Can you please give me the web link to request this "downgrade" CD media for XP from Microsoft?

And is this the same for Office 2007 - to Office 2003?

Just to confirm dbuny's mention of downgrading:

Last month one of my NPO clients purchased a license for 50 copies of MS-Office 2003 (through techsoup).

The Microsoft licensing/registration system, although somewhat convoluted, automatically gave them 3 different key codes; one for Office XP, one for Office 2003 and one for Office 2007.

Ah, wonderful. I guess I will just sit tight and wait for Vista to come to Tech Soup and use the downgrade rights.

Thanks, Don.

Just passing through. Good to see that the old crew, plus a few new names, have everything under control.

I no longer have the option of daily monitoring but I'll try to stop by now and then, and help out wherever I can.

AFTER you place your order for the actual license and receive all your codes, you can just call Microsoft Licensing fulfillment at (800) 248-0655.

Just a quick warning for those who are upgrading from XP to Vista. If you're doing a clean install [which I personally recommend], be sure to back up your files using something other than the XP transfer wizard. Vista does not import the XP transfer wizard files.

If I bought Office 2003 about 6 months ago does the software assurance let me get the 2007 when it is realased or do I need to wait the year and then buy 2007

Software assurance is included with microsoft licenses purchased through techsoup stock. This sofware assurance last for two years from the date of purchase. During these two years, you are able to upgrade to the most recent version of the program. Just log into the Microsoft e-open site. You will see that the new office applications appear in your account.
