Good questions. Most reseller accounts are already being resold on one level, and perhaps two. All of our reseller accounts that we have expect us to provide a first level of support. Our clients don't even know there is another company behind us. So my clients are dependant on me for support, which lucky for both of us I can supply up to a point.

If anything really difficult or beyond my control comes up I contact my provider and create a support ticket. Since they are large companies (mostly) the availability and turn around is quite good. Important things are generally fixed within a few hours.

And you are right, I can't re-boot the servers or have access to many aspects of the server, but since there are other resellers and clients hosted there, you would not expect me to. Since the main company is responsive, it has not been a problem. In about 95% of the cases, the things that people contact me about can be taken care of by me (or the client..).

I can't find fault with what you are doing in your background checks, but I couldn't go that far. After all, it's just a hosting account. Like a renter, if I have problems with the landlord or the building, I'm going to give my notice and move out. The one exception is the case where your hosting provider is also your domain registrar. A host CANNOT hold your site hostage, but they could do that with your domain. If you don't control your domain, you can't control your site. It's always safer to keep the, with two different companies.

I hope this helps.

Thankfully, the technology is there to support numerous quality reseller accounts from all sorts of registrars. This helps drive prices down. Good for cash strapped NP's who need FREE hosting and FREE applications.

You ask a good question. "And does the re-seller have the same control over the actual physical facilities as the wholesaler?"

No. most resellers can't touch the hardware. It's most likely out of state. That's the whole point in becoming a reseller. Someone else absorbs the infrastructure risk and allows you to resell for/with them. The benefit to the consumer is that small resellers can provide a good if not better layer of first tier support. How? because they're not spending their time making sure the servers are up and running. They are, in effect, paying a premium to have the wholesaler do this for them.

In addition, they help push prices down which forces the market to expand services and perks in order to keep customers.

Question:
"How do I know that a hosting company I might do business with is not re-selling me a package that he bought from a company that I could have bought from directly at a lower price?"

Short answer...you don't. But then again, how do I know that the Croc's I just bought my kid aren't cheaper at another store? I should have shopped. Same principle applies with hosting.

Long answer...the reseller recieved a "wholesale" price for the goods. So he can still "match" the retail price of the guy he bought it from and stillmake a buck. The wholesalers STILL have the upperhand when it comes to margins on products, but that's no different than any other business.

I have to say, it seems my current host, Bluehost.com, seems a great deal, with 30 gigs storage, 750 gigs bandwidth, most everything you could imagine so far as DBs, Ruby, etc., and very good customer tech support in my direct experience, all for $6.95 US/Month.

I hosted my website with Ixwebhosting. I bought 2 days ago.

They have huge company so I know they will be around. I hate companies that are unreliable, down alot, slow at times, or disappear before my year of hosting is up (worldcops.com gave me 8 of my 12 months lol).

The speed is ridiculous; my forum loads really quickly. The site was up 10 minutes after I finished the purchase. They always have customer support ready when I go into chat; so far I talked with them 3 times and I never had to wait (I was with globat before, the wait was 5 minutes, sometimes I had to wait half an hour).

They have basic for $3.95, but you don't get a free domain, and you don't get mysql.

I went with the $6.45/mon. You get free domain, 60 gigs space, 500 gigs/mon band, 5000 emails, 200 subdomains, 50 mysql databases, and ability to hook up to 6 domain names to the host.

They have 30 day money back guarantee if you're not satisfied. They also have 99.99% uptime guarantee; they will start to refund your money if it is not up 99% of the month.

Cheers.

We abruptly lost our web hosting provider and we have been evaluating replacement companies. This has been a whole new thing for us. As our past provider was someone we knew locally. This site has been a great resource for me in both aquiring more confidence as well as in harvesting companies names.

Libihost.com appears to offer us what we need - a web-based editor along with the ability to run scripts at a very reasonable price. However, as that old saying goes - "once bitten, twice shy." Before the committee is willing to move forward it would like to hear others experiences with this company. Anyone out there every used them, that is willing to share your experience with me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kathi

One company I would avoid is our current provider,
www.hostingnonprofits.com. I am doing research so that we can switch providers, because their tech support is TERRIBLE. If everything runs fine, their $4.95/mo price for 800MB disk space/50GB traffic was fine. But now I am having trouble with .CGI and .PHP forms, and help is nowhere to be found.
