After the great article on hardware recycling, I wondered if there's anything equivalent with software. I mean what do you do w/ old software.
Of course, the media and the manuals are all recyclable, but as a package, it'd be nice if we could give them to well deserving non-profits.
We've supplied an answer to this question in the latest addition of our serialized Ask TechSoup feature:

Does anyone have any other suggestions or advice surrounding donating software? Has you organization donated software or recieved donated software, and if so, what were your experiences like? Feel free to share.

Just wanted to make sure everyone knows if your computers, software and assorted things are not new enough or not in working order. Give them to Goodwill Industries. We recycle them. Look at the link below for further information.

Taken from the article:
"on the other hand, you want to donate Microsoft's Office suite you'll need to send the recipient the software package itself, including the program, all printed manuals and documentation, software keys, and the Certificate of Authenticity."
But what if we purchased volume licensing? I have 20 licenses but only one CD. Can I make copies of the original CD to distribute with the license?
What is the best way to handle this? Can I still donate this software?
Actually, I think that MS's terms for volume licensing prohibit transfer of ownership. In that case, you would be unable to "recycle" the 20 licenses you purchased from MS.
(I may be making that up, but I do seem to recall reading that somewhere before. Maybe someone has a link to it?)

Jeanne, how does Skydex Soft recycle software to non profit organizations? I don't see how your reply even comes close to answering the question or how it stas on topic. I went to the website and they are billing themselves out as an IT outsourcing firm. This has nothing to do with software recycling. Please read the Techsoup Community Rules and Standards. You are in violation of number 3 on the list.
