Free web hosting

03-22-2006 12:58 PM

Dear all,

I have been using a free web hosting company for almost a year now. However, I am not happy with this company because they've put so many banners on my website. For this reason, I would like to ask where I could find a free web hosting without banners and have at least 200MB of space. Does anyone knows?

Thank you in advance,

Since you are not paying for the web hosting, your particular host is making it's money from the banner ad revenue programs, which you likely agreed to when you signed up with them.

I am sure others will chime in with at least part of what you are after, but keep in mind that the host needs to make money in order to provide the service.

There is no free lunch.

Thank you all for replying my post. Here are my comments.

1. Yes, of course, I do realy know that there is no free lunch, but I think they should not take deep advantage of free web hosting to post so many banners on the user's websites. I totally agree that web hosting companies need to make money from banners, but 1 or 2 banners on the user's websites is fine, but do you think is it okay to say that web hosting companies use half the user's websites to host the banners?

2. About web hosting Pandela company. It is a nice web hosting site that don't have banners and ads. However, I have to find out what is the maximum size of a file to upload because Terms And Conditions don't mention about it. As far as I know, most free web hosting don't allow users to upload a file over 1MB.

It's not uncommon for these free Web hosts to place an excessive number of banners on your site, but the fact is that they can do whatever they want because you're not paying them a penny. Now I know these banner ads can be extremely annoying, and this is one of the main reasons I stay away from the free hosts. Another reason I avoid them is because customer support is often non-existent.

That said, allow me to suggest that you look into getting a paid hosting plan. These days hosting is really cheap and there are tons of excellent Web hosts to choose from. Plus you'll get many additional features and reliable support, minus those annoying ads.

Think about it.

Hey MJ - Does Pandela allow you to host a domain name, or just a subdomain on their site?
(I can go look it up, but thought others here might find the answer useful too)

Both.

I also believe the upload limit through their web interface is 5 meg...FTP is unlimited (in your storage limits)

Great support in the control panel as well. No ads, I'm happy so far.

Pandela allows you to host your own registered domain (only 1) and they give out free 5 subdomains. It is a good deal, isn't it?

I was happy with the free web hosting for the first 6 months because they told me that they were going to put from 1 to 2 banners on my website. But, they have been lied to me. After 6 months, they put banners all of over my website (half of the page), and they have not stated this matter in Terms And Conditions.
I am avoiding free web hosting now and will register at 1And1 company (www.1and1.com). It is cheap now, only $3/month and I get 5GB of space. Unbelievable price.

Just a quick comment on 1and1... Last year the had a "free web hosting for a year" deal and I signed up. After about 4 months I moved my site. The reason was partly becuase I had a reseller account with unlimited domains, but also because I found the 1and1 apps to be very poor quality and their control panel was confusing and VERY slow to work with. Also their stats were doo-doo.

Your experience may not be like mine and they may have improved things, but there are other sites that offer that kind of pricing and with a little research you should be able to find someone as good or better.

Hi SEO,

Thanks for your comments because you gave out a very good point that 1And1 have very slow control panel. Last night, I tried to test it out by registering a free domain name to see how it works. As a result, their control panel is not making me confuse (I think they have improved it), but the connection of control panel is VERY slow like you said. I had to wait about 3 minutes to open my control panel. It is not good at all.

I have seen a lot of ads on PC Magazine and PC World which talks about 1And1 is very good web hosting. However, once we get involved, we will see how bad it is.

The ads that you see in PCWorld, etc are just that, advertisements, so they need to be taken with a grain of salt.

Keep in mind that many of the highly touted web hosts out there offer a non-profit discount. So, the advertised price can frequently be substantially reduced for non-profits.

So, my suggestion is for you to seek out a host that does everything you need, regardless of price, and then contact them regarding discounts. You might be pleasantly suprised that you can enlist the services of a well respected host at a very attractive price.

Keep in mind that I am coming from a background of close to 20 years of web development experience and dozens of hosts in that time. The ten dollars or so that you spend on a reputable host is much "cheaper" than the free sites if you place any value at all on your time, energy and frustration.

Howdy,

Netfirms.com allows free hosting with only a single banner across the top with ads by Google, generally related to your website content. I have found it quite satisfactory for my free hosted sites.

Hope this helps!

Be Blessed!
