Europeans Targeted by Mesh Networking

A little Mesh Info,

When I read the capabilities of having a 'hot city' as in a hot spot I couldn't help but post this.

*********************

Mesh networking has become more widespread in the United States in the last year, launching first in smaller cities but more recently spreading to major cities. Among the cities with mesh networking contracts in place are Philadelphia, Anaheim and Milwaukee, while cities like San Francisco are seriously considering it.

Mesh networking is a way to route data, voice and instructions between nodes. It allows for continuous connections and reconfiguration around blocked paths by "hopping" from node to node until a connection can be established.

Mesh networking is certain nifty. This article reads like a press release, however. I heard mixed reviews of Tropos' equipment from people working on wireless networking projects after the hurricanes in the Gulf coast.

It is a press release.

solar powered mesh

wireless meshes are such a cool idea.
any reason why the mesh deivces couldn't have solar rechargers / hand cranks for use in areas where there isn't a reliable electricity source?
that would work pretty well with the MIT $100 computer if it could be made cheap enough.

No. No reason at all why this couldn't happen.

I agree with you Zac.

Solar powered Wifi is already widely deployed in Australia (for the simple reason many of the towers used have no land-line electricity and are already solar powered for mobile telephony etc.).

Examples of possibly conceptual suitable solutions can be found here and here

Caveat - Of course you need a sufficiently high ratio of sunlight to darkness/cloud-cover for these to be effective (not a problem in my part of the world).

Nice links, Don. I wonder how much these cost?
