Looking for a Web Developer

I am looking for a reputable web developer to aid us in design of a new website in Palatine, IL. I have several quotes from nearby companies but I am not sure how good they are (although I can look at sample sites). This does not have to be done "on the cheap" and we do need a very professional looking site. Any one have any suggestions?

I would look at a company's portfolio first and then contact the company for pricing, but also to get a feel for how they operate.

Once cost is not a huge concern, you want someone with the design skills, but also the ability to work with you and get the project as professionally as possible.

The TechSoup Tech Finder has a number of firms that should be suitable and should provide a discount for NPs. I'm going to add a plug for AtomicPlaypen.com and ideapark.com that have the professionalism and skill you may be looking for.

Good advice by Chris.

If you want to take this advice a step further, you can ask each company to provide you with the names of some of their recent clients, whom you could contact directly and find out first hand how they felt about the quality of the work done, the level of support received, and so on.

I have to tell you though -- most people don't even bother with this step of calling a company's references. But if you do go ahead with it, the feedback obtained from clients might prove to be quite informative in helping you decide which firm to choose.

And remember also to check out TechFinder, as Chris suggested.

Before you go shopping for designers, make sure you have a well thought out RFP in hand. You can judge the visual/design abilities of designers by looking at their portfolios, but you will not get compareable quotes if you do not have an RFP (request for proposal). If you do not have a RFP and can not put one together in house, it may pay to get together with a technology consultant that can help you put one together.

I am not sure if you are still looking but we only work with nonprofits and would be happy to chat with you. You can see our portfolio, call our refernces and talk to us about anything in-between.

And be sure you know what types of technologies you will require (or forseeably expand to needing), so that your RFQ includes all necessary skills (databases, scripting languages etc.)
