Grayed Out Options on Access 2003 Menus

08-08-2005 8:29 AM

Is there something easily identifiable that would make several menu options unavailable in Access 2003? Specifically, I need the Linked Table Manager, but it's grayed out. The user is an Administrator on her machine. The Add Ins menu option is also grayed out.

Thanks!

Does this only happen on one database, or every database opened by this particular user?

I just got word back from her - yes, she does have access that menu option in other databases. With that said, from this same copy of the database, 2 other people have been able to relink the tables.

The databases (1 containing tables and 1 containing everything else) are being copied, via flash drive, to several parties to test.

Thanks

I have just established that this problem is only occuring for people with Access 2003 (it works on Access 2000 and XP). Any ideas?
Thanks

Hi,

I haven't seen this problem before, so unless someone else can dive-in with an idea I'm afraid it's a process of elimination...

1/ The database works properly for everyone except a single user.

2/ The user experiencing this problem is running Access 2003 (are any other users also running Access 2003?)

3/ The use with the problem only experiences this problem with your database (other databases open OK)

Assuming other users do run Access 2003 (and can open your database properly), we are left with a few possibilities -

a/ The copy of your database causing the problems is corrupt (send her another copy to try)

b/ She is trying to convert the database from a previous version and the conversion is failing (have her just open the database without converting)

c/ Her Access 2003 install is corrupt in some way that impacts on the code used in your database (have her repair or reload Access 2003)

Sorry no other ideas...

Rgds, Don

The same problem happened on another PC with Access 2003, however, I brought it home on another flash drive and was able to relink the tables with my own Access 2003. The person copying the files was able to take the original flash drive to another Office 2000 computer, copy the database, and relink the tables there.

I don't recall making any security setting changes in my Access at home, but I may have and it has slipped my mind.

Tis a quandry!

This is a long shot but worth a try...

If Office has been started in safe mode (deliberately or due to a corrupt document), certain features are disabled by default and need to be manually re-enabled - This can include the Access Linked Table manager.

To re-enable the Linked Table Manager (or anything else disabled):

1/ On the Access Help menu, click 'About Microsoft Access'.
2/ Click Disabled Items.
3/ See if Linked Table Manager is amongst the items disabled - If it is, click on it and click "Enable"

We are using Access 2003 on all of our computers and the linked table manager works just fine. I don't know if it makes any difference, but we do have the latest patches installed on Office 2003. Try holding the shift key down and then click on the icon to open the access program. Then check the linked table manager button. It's possible that the menu bar is customized and set to gray out that option. The shift key will let you get behind the scenes and behind the startup menu.

I do already have to go in holding down SHIFT because the front end automatically hides the database window. I have asked the 2 problematic users to check if they are fully patched - I hadn't thought of that.
I'll keep my fingers crossed!
