SAVCE vs. Norton 2005

Last year I purchased Norton 2004 AV from Techsoup for about 50 desktop pc's we have here. I need to reorder this year and I am wondering if I should not get the Corporate Edition 10 instead of the NAV2005? Is the corporate edition much better? I have never used it so I do not know what the differences are. Will it take up less resources for the desktops still running Win98?

Thanks for any opinions.

I can't comment on the Win98 box beyond my Corp Ed. version 8.1 install (which I believe installs an older version for legacy systems such as Win9x). It doesn't suck up resources for the couple of 9x systems I have left.

What is nice is the central management from Corp Ed. You can have updates downloaded onto a "server" computer and distribute internally to your network instead of wasting bandwidth and time (WAN connection is slower than your LAN).

Other admin features like the console to launch network wide scanning (if you have an outbreak you can start the local scanners from using admin software on just one PC).

Also you can have usage policies (such as the local user can't disable autoprotect... nice since the local worm won't be able to disable it either :-) ). One policy that defines how it runs instead of configuring all of the machines. It has a network installer as well so you won't have to have a disk for each install.

All in all if those PCs are on a network I'd go with the Corp edition any day. I even use it on standalone PCs at remote facilites that aren't connected to our coporate network. I also like the look of it better than the more visually flashy standalone AV versions.

Sounds real good since it does not use as many resources. I'll need to look further into upgrading our systems to XP. It's just that half of them are using SDRam which is hard to find at a decent price. For the network features, does one need to be using Active Directory? All of our files that we access are just shared on a Win2k Server. Will this still work?

Thanks,

Chad

It doesn't rely on Active Directory.

Won't be a problem for you.

SAVCE does not require Active Directory. There is a little file on the client computer that contains the name of the server that is the primary server (where they will get their updates).

You can even set it up in unmanaged mode if you don't have a server at all. You do lose the management benefits (e.g. the ability to see the virus definition status of all your computers) but you still get a slightly less resource hogging application.
