One of my organization's projects needs a simple database that four people who work in different parts of the state can enter and view data in. We don't host anything onsite and we don't have a VPN, so I'm looking for a solution hosted somewhere else.
I've done a little poking around but everything I've come across (like ASPs) seems too high-end and pricy for what we need. I've also thought of setting up a PHP/MySQL solution - I'd just hate to reinvent the wheel if something that's been crash tested is already available.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Sasha
Depending on what you need, PHP/MYSQL should be able to do what you want.
It's hard to say if there is anything that exists that will suit, since there is no way to tell what you really need... :-)
So if can describe what you need as far a data that has to be stored (number of fields and amount of data in each field), features (do you need reports or the ability to email database records?), and how you will use it we may be able to suggest something. If you have PHP/mysql available, there are a number of free apps that may do what you want out of the virtual box.

I'm not sure how good this one is, but I've read an article on EWeek about it
(couple of weeks ago).

It had pretty good reviews.

Thanks for the helpful questions and tips.
The database will contain about 25 fields - all text (<255 char), date, and yes/no, except for a single longer text memo field for notes.
Being able to do queries and reports, as well as to email records, would all probably be helpful - I'm sure we'll be growing and learning as we use this, so I want to include as much sensible functionality as we can expect.
I'd appreciate any recommendations that folks have experience with. As always in the nonprofit world, free is ideal, though we might be up for paying for something with significant value.
Thanks!
