We have a lot of folks working behind the scenes at TechSoup on the big project of giving our website a makeover. We’re pleased to announce the next round of changes that you will soon see live on the site (look for these in early September). Here are some of the key changes:
Organization code: Org association code will replace the org ID / password combination , but User ID will remain the same. Newly registering orgs can set their org. association code. Existing orgs will be set by us to their old OrgID, which can be modified if they choose.
Logins: User logins are changing from username to email address. Username will still be a mandatory field that we use both for forums and for the welcome message at the top of the screen. Users will only have to login once, as this same login will work for both the forums and TechSoup Stock.
Passwords: Our process for sending forgotten passwords has changed: when a user requests a password, the system will generate a random temporary one and then the users will need to change it when they log in. User passwords will be encrypted and there will be a new security question and answer for users to retrieve forgotten passwords.
Shopping carts: A user must be logged in and associated with an organization before they can add ANY item to their cart. You can go into your cart and run restrictions check at any time, without having to go thru entire check out process. Media is now the default option in the cart, but you can choose to opt-out. Please note that any open carts before the site change will have to be re-loaded.
Ease of use: have changed some of the words we use on the site to reflect our mission of facilitating donations and to try to make these more user frien dly. Agreements for the products are consolidated on one page, in one phase of order process and the same question doesn't have to be answered multiple times for products in the same program.
What won’t be included in this round of changes:
The User Experience won’t be completely polished. Several styles are yet to be finalized. Many supporting pages will remain in the old look and feel. We have not yet redesigned the left navigation panel and we are still in the process of making the site completely accessible.
Planned Site and Service Outage: In order to implement these changes, TechSoup.org and Client Services will be unavailable September 10 through September 12. We expect the site to be fully operational again on September 13.
If you have any questions or feedback about any of these changes, please post them here!

Congratulations on your new initiatives and your effective communication of the improvements. This is indicative of the great work you people continue to do for the nonprofit sector. Thank you.

We appreciate all that you do for us making it posible for each of us to do what we do. :)
What is your solution for when email addresses change? Does that mean my login identifier changes as well?
To accomplish your goal of a single login does not require exposing our email addresses through the login process.
Thank you for noting your concern about our site changes and user privacy. We take user privacy very seriously here at TechSoup and believe that we have made several changes in this project that will enhance the protection of our users.
Your email address is not displayed on the screen or in the forums, that will continue to be your username (“nabramovitz” in your case, or “anna” in mine.)
When you do change your email address, your login identifier changes with it, so it will remain current. Meaning, you will always log in with the latest version of your email address that you have entered into our systems.
Use of email as a login identifier is also a web industry standard practice. We have found that having an extra username as a required field for log in adds an extra layer of complexity for our users. We are attempting to simplify login for everyone.
Please let me/us know if you have other questions.
Final alert: Our website and forums will be coming down at 7 pm tonight and should be available again Sunday evening. Have a wonderful weekend.
On the log in, can you say why there is no 'remember me' option for that? That is something which I would really like to have here.

We’ve been listening to feedback from users and have discovered a few bugs in our new site. We’re working hard to solve these issues and will keep you updated here on our progress.
Only Ground Shipping Available
Unfortunately, we can’t provide any expedited shipping for physical products at this time. We’re working on solving this issue and will let you know in this forum discussion when the issue is resolved.
In some cases, if you make a mistake while trying to join as a user, the user join page will reload with a new Anti-Spam Verification question, but the previous answer is not cleared from the field. The original answer must be deleted and the new answer entered to successfully Join TechSoup.
Organization Association Codes
-Users are unable to associate with previously registered U.S. Territory organizations at this time.
-The Association Code field does not accept periods (‘.’), though this is not currently called out in the messaging on that field.
Browse by Task
Product listing on Browse by Task category pages are not currently in alphabetical order.
Donation Request Checkout Issues
-Restrictions Check (checkout Step 2): If the user updates quantities of an item after the restrictions check has been run, the restrictions messages will display again. Users will need to click the “Check Restrictions” button at the bottom of the page a second time.
-Agreements (Checkout Step 3) Some products do not have any Agreements but the instructions still ask users to ‘review the agreements below’. Users are still able to proceed through the checkout process when there are no visible Agreements.
Forgot Password Feature Will Not Work for Internet Explorer 6 Users
The ‘Forgot Password’ email field used to email your password update is not available in IE6 with SOUP2. Please use a supported browser to complete this step.
Here's the latest update on fixes we're making with the new site:
We resolved the shipping bug issues, and now offer all shipping options.
We're working to resolve a small infrastructure problem where some users are experiencing trouble with new accounts. Fortunately this is only impacting a small number of users at this time and we will keep you posted when we have a resolution to this issue.
Since the change over this month, my log-in is no longer associated with my organization (Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre Foundation, Inc.) I'm desperately trying to see if the ID is available anywhere, but wonder if it will even make a difference. The initial account was set-up some time ago, and I'm not sure where to find it.
