Hello, we are looking for a cheap laptop that includes WiFi. We will essentially only be using this machine for a label printer software, in addition to online database access (Salesforce). I am fine with all specs of this laptop: https://www.techsoup.org/Products/--HW-50019--RCIInterConnectionNotebook, but I am unsure if it has WiFi Capabilities, and TechSoup customer support can not guarantee it does. It does have an included Integrated Wireless Network Adapter. Is this WiFi? Or just for connecting to a business network?
It sounds like the internal wireless adapter is all you'll need to go online. But even if it doesn't have an internal wireless network adapter, or you can't get it to work, just buy an old USB network adapter on eBay and plug it in. Often they come with the software on a CD or you can download the drivers and software to a flash drive using another machine and install them on the laptop that way. You might want to make sure it is all compatible with Windows 10 before purchase.
Somebody recently donated an old laptop to our organization which had a Broadcom internal wireless network adapter which Windows detected, but I couldn’t get it to work. Windows saw the internal adapter, it even saw my wireless network, but when I tried to connect I continued to get error messages of one kind or another. I spent a couple hours downloading drivers using an Ethernet cable to connect to the internet, and still I couldn’t use the wireless adapter.
So I installed the software for a Netgear USB wireless adapter that I had in my spare parts pile, plugged in the adapter and it worked like a charm. But that was using Windows XP and how things have changed.....
Thanks! I think we'll give it a try, and worst case scenario, we buy an adapter as you've said.
These machines are provided via a partner and as such, I don't think you can be sure of the exact specs of the machine you will receive beyond what the listing on TechSoup says. A wireless network adapter would be WIFI. The listing on TS says it comes with one, but TS should verify that information with the partner.
Using the other specs like the 250GB drive and 4GB of RAM you may be able to spot machines on the partner site like the one you can expect to get.
And if the machine says it has WIFI then it should work. These are refurb machines, not broken machines. :-)
