I need to buy a copy of MS Windows 7 Pro 64 bit for one of our laptops. The laptop was donated and has an invalid copy of the same OS so I really just need to acquire a valid product key. TechSoup offers me two license versions of Windows 7, Get Genuine or an upgrade version. The Get Genuine sounds like it would work in our situation, simply replacing an invalid copy of the OS but includes the restriction that if you ever buy a Get Genuine Microsoft product, you may never again purchase that same family of products, operating systems, for the entire life of your organization. The upgrade version specifically excludes upgrading from the same version of the OS. In other words, I can upgrade from Vista or 2000 to 7 but not from Windows 7 to Windows 7. So I'm wondering which is the correct product to request. The donation fee is a bit more for the upgrade but that's not the issue. I need to fix the license on one machine but don't want to close the door on any requesting any future donations. Any advice on what to do would be appreciated. I got all the way through verifying our eligibility to request the software but stopped when I saw the "never again" restriction. Thanks. Michael
As you noticed, the Get Genuine program has special rules because it is a special program within TechSoup's catalog. The license included with the Get Genuine program is a full operating system license, not an upgrade. The full license is necessary for computers with counterfeit, pirated, or otherwise illegal, unlicensed, or improperly licensed Windows operating systems. The full license is also needed if your current operating system is Home Premium, Home Basic, or Starter editions of Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP. Windows 7 Professional Upgrade is the professional edition of the previous Microsoft operating system. The upgrade must be installed on a computer with a pre-existing Professional, Business, or Enterprise Windows operating system.
You mentioned the computer you would like to request software for contains an invalid Windows 7 license. In this instance, you would need to request the Get Genuine Windows 7 full license. Although this program allows eligible organizations to place only one request ever for Get Genuine products, we advise organizations to purchase any additional licenses they may need in the future. Keep in mind, since Get Genuine products are part of the Windows Desktop Operating Systems title group, requests for them will reduce the number of operating system upgrade products you may request in your current two-year donation cycle. For more information, and to view all the special rules regarding the Get Genuine program, visit the Get Genuine product description.

I'm still completely flummoxed by all of this. Why would they ever restrict it to a 'one time only' donation, and then still hit us on our annual line items.
So, what is the workaround to use the upgrade versions? Pirate XP? Terrible.
Will TechSoup be getting the 'system builder' edition of Win8?
The Get Genuine program can be confusing but it's great for getting your operating systems up to date.
While it is true that you may only place a request of a Windows Get Genuine full operating System one time, you can request up to 50 licenses if you are not restricted by previous requests for operating systems in the past (i.e. if you have 1 request for the Windows 7 Professional Upgrade within your current allotment cycle then you only have 49 Windows 7 Professional Get Genuine licenses left that you may request).
The products in our catalog are the only ones we offer for donation requests, when new products get added to our catalog a new product alert is sent out. To subscribe to new product alerts go to the top left corner of TechSoup.org and click 'Subscribe to the Newsletters' then click the second box that says 'New Product Donation Alert' and sign up.
