I'm taking over the bookkeeping for our small non-profit. We have been using Quickbooks Premier 2017 desktop version. I've received conflicting advice about whether to change to Quckbooks online. I've heard and read that the online version does not have as many features for nonprofits and might limit how we can do our reports. Is this still true? Also, am I understanding correctly that with TechSoup, the online version is $50 a year the same as an upgrade to Qucikbooks Premier 2019 single user? And finally, if we do decide to move from the desktop to the online version, is the transfer easy? I don't actually know how to use Quickbooks but am a fairly good learner and am confident that I can ask people for help if I am stuck but any tips for webinars, etc. are welcome. Thank you!
QuickBooks online has many of the features of desktop, but not all. If you run QB payroll, the desktop editions become unsupported fairly quickly, but without needind QB payroll, you can keep using the desktop edition for years. I think if you are on Windows 10, you have to have 2018, but not sure. Take a look at the community forum at https://community.intuit.com/products/quickbooks-help-en-us. Many excellent answers to problems there and it is free. I would look for some training at your local community college. Many have non-credit courses that are a day or so and quite inexpensive. I took a job about five years ago using QB online. The payday that occcurred when the online version was down all day, the Executive Director told me to convert to the desktop version. My impressions of online was there were things that happened that no one (not even Intuit) knew why or how to fix. Accounts would show up in the chart of accounts at random. Classes would suddenly appear. My question is who is asking for QB online and why do they want it? Are they going to be entering transactions into the online version? Do they want reports? Check out the questions and complaints in the community forum to determine if it will work for you. It is fairly easy to move from desktop to online but a pain to go the other way. Good luck.
Thank you Glenn for the information. We are a small non-profit. Can we get one license copy for online QuickBooks, then allow different people to log in. For example one might enter in deposits and checks, and a second person might be merging the donors with a thank you letter. Or do we need three stations? Thanks. We are a small religious non-church nonprofit using Quickbooks desktop 2016 - considering our upgrade: 1. MAC, 2. nonprofit version, 3. online? Which one? It seems like our combination of the 3 isn't possible? We want: 990, 941 & W2 capabilities.
