We recently moved to Office 365 and want to create an intranet using SharePoint Online. This will be for approximately100 users and need the following features:
I know there are numerous intranet-in-a-box solutions that offer these features for SharePoint but everything I have come across is very expensive.Being a non profit our budget is extremely limited and most of these are well beyond our budget. Are there any affordable solutions available?Has anyone successfully built an intranet on SharePoint online using OOB features?
Would you consider using something that didn't use SharePoint? You could use WordPress to create an Intranet site with Pages that could provide #1 and #2.
If you were to use it to upload documents it could take care of #3 although I might suggest having an admin manage that process.
News and announcement could be done using the Posts feature. Using WP means you have no costs other than hosting the site and creating and maintaining which could be a shared task.
I have no suggestions for a Form Builder. You would have to provide more information. But the Calendar could be provided using Google Calendar. The Calendar would not be only on the Intranet, but that might be something you want to access from anywhere if users are logged in.
We are actually using WordPress currently and looking to move to SharePoint online to better integrate with Office 365 and eliminate hosting costs.
I've been developing with Joomla CMS for years and it has about everything you could imagine either built in or available as a component, module or plugin. Joomla is free, open-source and behind Wordpress, the most used platform for web development. An Employee Directory (searchable) is available out of the box as are birthday and any other listings you choose to incorporate. Document libraries are available for little to no cost as addons. DocMan, PhocaDocs and more will all manage as simple or complex a structure as you wish, all the while allowing you to incorporate Access Privileges using Joomla's own built-in ACL. News/Announcements again are a basic function of Joomla out of the box. Their news/articles management is second to none. There are plenty of form builders available as well. My personal favorite is RSForms Pro. It is a commercial product, but fairly inexpensive and allows you to quickly generate almost any form you can imagine, including dependencies (if a user selects a particular item, that creates new functions based upon the response, etc.). Calendars are plentiful and free. Most will import/export to all major calendar programs such as iCal, google calendars, etc.
Joomla is great for creating a community based site with forums, chat rooms, facebook like features, file sharing, photo, video and media sharing/storage, and much much more. I've created a site for both supporters in the form of memberships/sponsorships as well as a portal for my nonprofit clients for support requests, information and programs that aren't visible to the general public. I actually started my nonprofit to assist other area and regional nonprofits with their IT infrastructure. We started out designing and hosting websites for little to no charge, and gradually increased our reach to assist in all areas of IT. All because Joomla is free and supported by hundreds of thousands in the Joomla community.
I hope this helps!
